Becoming a Scientist: Learning the Craft
The PhD is the highest level of university education and provides the skills needed to conduct research with a high degree of autonomy and openness to international dialogue.
The three-year programme is characterised by hands-on training through direct involvement in research activities, complemented by specific training courses.
Admission to PhD programmes is through a competitive Call, open to candidates holding a Laurea Magistrale (Master’s Degree), an equivalent degree awarded under the previous Italian university system, or a foreign academic qualification recognised as valid for admission purposes only.
The University of Pisa encourages the participation of international students and promotes interaction with the economic and social system, in order to strengthen the connection between research and the productive world
The Call for Applications for admission to the PhD programmes at the University of Pisa (41st cycle) has been published. The deadline is 18 July 2025.
The Call, available at the link below, contains full details on eligibility requirements, application procedures, grants, and deadlines.

The University of Pisa actively takes part in National PhD Programmes, i.e. advanced education and research paths promoted by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) in collaboration with top-level universities and research institutions across the country.

The University of Pisa fosters connections between research and the productive sector through collaborations with institutions and companies. Various pathways—such as industrial PhD and advanced apprenticeship programmes—strengthen the link between training and innovation.
