Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)

The ARWU ranking is published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, one of the most respected international agencies evaluating universities and research institutions.
In the 2025 edition, the University of Pisa is ranked among the top 300 universities worldwide and fourth in Italy, after Sapienza University of Rome (which maintains first place nationally) and the Universities of Milan and Padua.

Compared to 2024, Pisa confirms its place among the leading Italian universities for the number of former students and researchers who are Nobel Prize or Fields Medal winners — ranking first and second, respectively, after Sapienza — and third for research productivity per capita, following San Raffaele University and the University of Trento. The University of Pisa also achieves excellent results in the Shanghai Ranking by Subject (GRAS). In the 2025 edition, the University appears in 24 subjects. The best result is in Veterinary Sciences, ranked 25th worldwide and second in Italy. This is followed by Robotics, which enters the ranking for the first time and places the University 29th globally and second in Italy. There are also significant results for Aerospace Engineering and Pharmacy, both in the 51–75 band worldwide and 5th in Italy, and for Mathematics, ranked 76–100 worldwide and second in Italy, alongside the Politecnico di Milano, Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Turin.
