Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)

The QS ranking is based on indicators of academic performance, institutional structure and international reputation. In the 2026 edition (results published in 2025), the University of Pisa ranks 343rd globally, its best position in the past ten years, and 7th in Italy, after two years of decline. The University now falls within the upper-middle tier of the global ranking (first quartile, with 77.1% of institutions ranked below or equal to Pisa). Weaknesses remain in employer reputation, internationalisation (both in terms of students and lecturers), and student–staff ratio.

In the 2025 QS by Subject, the Natural Sciences area achieved the highest placement (148th, 5th in Italy), though slightly down from last year, while Arts & Humanities (180th, 7th in Italy) and Life Sciences & Medicine (241st, 8th in Italy) continued to improve.

The University of Pisa has increased over time the number of subjects in which it appears in the rankings. In the latest edition, 34 subjects were ranked (compared with 26 in 2023 and 2024), with four entering the top 100: Classics & Ancient History (29th), Archaeology (51–100), Veterinary Sciences (51–100) and Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (51–100). The first three confirm their position, while Data Science and Artificial Intelligence appears in the ranking for the first time, entering directly into the top 100.
