Project description
The PhD in Business Administration and Management aims to provide participants with a solid methodological foundation combined with advanced knowledge and expertise in business and management disciplines. The main objective is to foster critical thinking and an aptitude for scientific research through a coordinated and integrated approach to teaching, research, and both individual and collaborative experimentation. The programme places strong emphasis on balancing theory and practice and maintaining a constant focus on internationalisation.
The programme offers a high-level training pathway that is nationally excellent and internationally oriented. It represents an opportunity for PhD candidates for cultural and professional development suited both to entering the field of research in business and management and to accessing the labour market at a level consistent with the investment made in their education.
The PhD programme is designed to enhance employability by promoting the strengths of the Italian university system, with particular attention to internationalisation processes and to new models of managerial, organisational, and administrative innovation. It covers the following areas:

The programme is jointly delivered by the Universities of Pisa (administrative seat), Florence, and Siena.

Course objectives
The main goal of the PhD programme is to develop critical thinking and research skills at the level required for independent researchers, in line with the best international practices and standards. Specifically, the programme aims to enable students to:
- Master a set of research methods appropriate for the development of a PhD thesis, with the rigour required for methodologically sound research;
- Develop in-depth knowledge in the fields of business administration and management;
- Learn how to design and carry out original research in business and management;
- Acquire and demonstrate the ability to communicate research findings clearly and effectively;
- Acquire and demonstrate the ability to teach university-level courses in business administration and management;
- Acquire and demonstrate the ability to work effectively with other researchers and scholars from diverse disciplinary and academic backgrounds;
- Acquire and demonstrate an understanding of ethical standards in business research, teaching, and service.
