Vicente Rios Ibanez

Vicente Rios is Associate Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics and Management, University of Pisa. He holds a PhD in Economics from Universidad Pública de Navarra (2016), an MSc in Macroeconomic Policy and Financial Markets from the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (2010), a postgraduate degree in Financial Markets and Instruments from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (2010), and a BA in Economics from the University of Valencia (2009).

His research focuses on spatial econometrics, regional economics, model averaging, forecasting and machine learning, political economy, social progress, inequality, environmental economics and energy economics. His work combines applied econometrics with regional and institutional analysis, with particular attention to spatial dependence, policy spillovers, resilience, social progress, quality of government, gender and political empowerment, and the environmental transition.

He has published 26 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Regional Studies, Energy Economics, Ecological Economics, European Journal of Political Economy, Papers in Regional Science, Oxford Economic Papers, Social Indicators Research, Journal of Policy Modeling, Spatial Economic Analysis, Local Government Studies and Decision Support Systems. Several of these publications are in first-quartile or first-decile journals according to Journal Citation Reports classifications. His recent work includes articles on women’s political empowerment and inequality, social capital and the green transition in European regions, women’s political empowerment and air quality, social trust and social progress, and spatial dynamic models of COVID-19 diffusion.

His research has received international recognition. He was awarded the Martin Beckmann RSAI Annual Award for the best paper in Papers in Regional Science in 2024 and 2020, the GSSI-AISRe Young Researcher Award in 2018, the Juan Ramón Cuadrado Young Researcher Award in Regional Economics in 2016 and 2014, and the Alexandre Pedrós Young Researcher Award in Public Economics in 2016. He has participated in several competitive research projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Spanish Institute for Fiscal Studies, Fundación Ramón Areces and other institutions.

Before joining the University of Pisa, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Milan and held academic positions at Universidad Pública de Navarra. He has also been a visiting researcher at the University of Pisa and a visiting student at the University of Bologna. His teaching experience includes courses in econometrics, macroeconomics, economics of the European Union, introductory economics and spatial econometrics, taught in English, Italian and Spanish.

He has acted as referee for leading journals including Journal of Economic Growth, Energy Economics, Ecological Economics, Regional Studies, Spatial Economic Analysis, Journal of Regional Science and Papers in Regional Science. He holds the Italian ASN habilitation for Associate Professor in Economia Politica, Econometria, Politica Economica, Economia Applicata and Scienza delle Finanze, as well as Spanish national academic accreditation.
