He received his Ph.D. %(specialization)
in Physics in June 1974 at the Scuola Normale Superiore with a thesis on General Relativity (at that time he also completed his military service as an Officer in the Navy).
He returned to Italy after spending two years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. in the plasma physics group of B. Coppi and became first assistant and then, in 1983, associate professor in plasma physics at the Scuola Normale Superiore.
He worked for two years, from September 1987 to November 1989, as Group Leader in the theoretical division of Jet (Joint European Torus) in Culham Abingdon UK, (one of the main international experiments in plasma physics applied to thermonuclear fusion).
In 1989 he won the competition for Full Professor of Theoretical Physics and was appointed by the Department of Theoretical Physics of the University of Turin where he taught from November 1990 to October 1996.
In November 1996 he became full professor of Plasma Physics at the University of Pisa where he served until October 2017 (retirement). In 2022 he has been nominated Emeritus Professor.
Since November 2017 he has a free research association contract with the Physics Department of the University of Pisa where he also maintains a teaching activity.
From 2000 to 2016 he was President of the Doctorate of Applied Physics and for four years he directed the Galileo Galilei DoI In 2006 he was appointed Honorary Professor at the Moscow Physical Technical Institute, Dolgoprudny, Moscow Region, Russia (one of the main and most selective teaching and research centers in Russia).
In 2008 he was appointed Correspondent Member of the Accademia dei Lincei. %and then National Member in 2021. He was part of the Energy Commission of the Lincei and is now part of the Research Commission.

In 2021 he was appointed National Member of the Accademia dei Lincei.
First at the Scuola Normale Superiore, then at the University of Turin and then in Pisa, he directed numerous degree and doctoral theses in Plasma Physics, training young researchers who subsequently established themselves nationally and internationally.% and becoming the most representative element at the Italian level of theoretical research in plasma physics.
He has spent frequent research periods in the USA, Britain, the Netherlands, Russia and Japan.
He has served as co-editor of European Physics Letters (EPL) and European Physics Journal D (EPJD). He is currently co-editor of the Accademia dei Lincei Reports and of the new Springer Journal ``Fundamental Plasma Physics''.
He was a member of the management committee of COST action P14 and was and Project Coordinator of the INTAS project Call 211 Project 233. He served as an external expert for INFRA-2007 supported by the European Community.
He was a member of the Evaluation Committee of the institutes of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, CNR (Panel for Physics started in 2008) and of the AERES Evaluation Panel of the CELIA (Center Laser Intenses et Applications, Bordeaux) 2009. He has been asked to evaluate research projects presented for the LASERLAB EUROPE laboratories and for the LULI (Laboratoire pour l'Utilisation des Lasers Intenses, 'Ecole Polytechnique) European access program.
He has served on numerous scientific committees of international Plasma Physics conferences. He was a member of the organizing committee of tCNR institute `` Science and Technology of Plasmas""
