Research

Research interests

My research interests lie within the field of General, Clinical and Paediatric Nursing Sciences, with a particular focus on the development, evaluation and implementation of evidence-based nursing interventions in complex clinical, educational and organisational contexts.
A well-established line of research concerns nursing and health professions education, with specific attention to effective pedagogical strategies, meaningful learning and competence assessment. In this area, my research focuses on the use of active teaching methodologies—such as simulation-based education, team-based learning and problem-based learning—the evaluation of educational outcomes (including OSCEs, psychometric instruments and learning outcomes), and the development of transversal competencies, including communication skills, emotional intelligence and patient safety. Particular emphasis is placed on continuing professional development (CPD) and adult learning models, also within long-term care settings and during professional transition phases.
A further area of interest relates to the quality of nursing care and nursing-sensitive outcomes, with studies conducted in critical care, surgical and community settings. This research includes the analysis of patients’ and caregivers’ experiences, the management of fundamental care needs according to the Fundamentals of Care Framework, patient safety, healthcare professionals’ wellbeing, and the impact of organisational changes—such as those occurring during health emergencies and the COVID-19 pandemic—on care outcomes.
Another significant research focus concerns organisational climate and culture, with particular reference to patient safety culture, workplace violence against nurses, risk and protective factors in clinical settings, and the implications for clinical governance and healthcare quality.
From a methodological perspective, my research interests include the integrated use of quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods designs, systematic and rapid reviews, Delphi and e-Delphi studies, validation of measurement instruments, and theory development in nursing science. Research activities are often carried out within national and international networks and are strongly oriented towards the translation of findings into clinical practice, university education and health policy.
