Celia Duce is Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry (DCCI), University of Pisa (UNIPI) and Associate researcher at National Institute of Optics of the National Research Council (INO CNR) of Pisa. She coordinates the THERMOLAB group at DCCI working in thermodynamics, calorimetry, thermal analysis and physico-chemical characterisation of materials and solutions. Her teaching activity concerns Biophysical Chemistry for the MD Course in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry I and Laboratory for the BD Course in Chemistry, and General Chemistry for the BD Course in Biological Sciences, UNIPI.
In 2000 she obtained the Masters degree in Chemistry cum Laude at UNIPI and in 2005 she obtained the PhD in Biomaterials at UNIPI. In 2024 she obtained the National Scientific Qualification (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale) for the position of Full Professor. Currently she is elected member of the Council boerd of Italian Association of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis (AICAT); member of the board of the Doctoral School in Chemistry & Material Science (DSCM), DCCI UNIPI; Member of the Center for Instrument Sharing, CISUP, UNIPI; Member of the National Interuniversity Consortium for the Materials Science and Technology, INSTM, Member of the Interdepartmental Center of Cultural Heritage Sciences, CISBEC, UNIPI; Member of the Interuniversity Consortium for Chemical Reactivity and Catalysis, CIRCC. From 2011 to 2013 she was elected member of the Council board of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis Interdivisional Group, GICAT, of Italian Chemical Society. In 2014 she was included in the list of 350 leading scientists in Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis: Who is Who in Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry Series: Hot Topics in Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, Vol. 10, Springer 2014, and in 2008 she was awarded of Alberto Lucci award, by AICAT.
She has been member of the scientific committee of 6 international conferences on Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry and member of the organising committee of 4 national conferences and 1 international school and co-Chair of the XL National Congress on Calorimetry Thermal Analysis and Applied Thermodynamics, Pisa, (2018). She is associate Editor of the international scientific journal Thermal Advance published by Elsevier.
She is an active member of national and international research projects and scientific responsible of physico-chemical studies founded by external partners.
Her research interests include: 1) Physico-chemical characterisation of curing and ageing processes of complex materials for Cultural Heritage such fluid binders in paintings, resins, and waxes in archaeological findings, geopolymers and their precursors. 2) Green Chemistry: Chemical physical characterization and synthesis of biomaterials from agricultural wastes; iii) Use and development of coaxial MW assisted processes for: i) extraction of essential oils, polyphenols and soluble proteins from organic wastes; ii) synthesis of nanoparticles; iii) sterilisation of air from viruses and pathogens 3) Environmental Chemistry: Characterization of tannery sludges and their ability to release hazardous metal ions in the environment.
