Research

Research interests

Puliafito's research lies in distributed systems and computer networks, with a specific focus on the cloud-edge continuum. His contributions span architectures, algorithms, protocols, and experimental platforms. His work focuses in particular on service continuity and cloud-edge orchestration.
Unlike the relatively stable cloud, the continuum is highly dynamic: resources are constrained, nodes move, workloads fluctuate, and connectivity may be intermittent. Maintaining application-level correctness and performance in these conditions requires mechanisms for service continuity, namely ensuring seamless execution despite failures, mobility, or overloads. In this area, he has contributed a number of solutions, including but not limited to: approaches based on container migration for session-state transfer, server-side QUIC connection migration, and distributed proxy orchestration using HTTP Alternative Services. He also co-developed MobFogSim, a simulator for mobility-aware service migration in cloud-edge environments, and he has recently investigated TLS 1.3 features, including session resumption and post-quantum chryptography, to support fast and secure service continuity.
More recently, his research has broadened toward cloud-edge orchestration and execution support, including serverless computing in the cloud-to-edge continuum, compute/network-aware traffic steering, and predictive resource management based on foundation models. Taken together, these works position his profile at the intersection of distributed systems, service continuity, and adaptive cloud-edge control.
