Ceramics will be presented through an integrated archaeological and archaeometric approach. Students will have the opportunity to attend lessons on the history of research into the main classes (Italian, Gallic, African, and Eastern Terra Sigillata), on common and cooking wares and on the most widely distributed types of Roman amphorae.

The greater part of the hours will then be dedicated to practical activities involving the classification of ceramics from both an archaeological (typology, function) and archaeometric (production methods, provenance) perspective. The Winter School will be activated with at least 4 students. The maximum number of participants is set to 12 students.

The Winter School will be held on campus in Pisa, Laboratori di Casa Pacinotti, via Santa Maria, 24.

Teaching methodology for the archaeological and archaeometric study of Roman ceramics.

Students, PhD Students, Postdocs in Archaeology, Classics, History, and Arts. Anyone interested in Ceramic Studies.

Admission Requirements

Knowledge of Ancient History and Classical culture. At least a basic familiarity with the ceramic classes of the Roman period

Refund policy

A refund of the tuition fees is provided for documented cases of student illness/accident and close relative bereavement, reported within 15 days of the start of the Summer School.
