Profilo

Ruolo: Professore Associato

Struttura: Dipartimento di Medicina Clinica e Sperimentale

Settore scientifico-disciplinare: Medicina Interna MEDS-05/A

Prof. Stefano Masi is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, University of Pisa, with over 15 years of international experience in cardiovascular and metabolic research. He also serves as Consultant in Internal Medicine at the Pisa University Hospital and works at the Regional Referral Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Arterial Hypertension, within the Division of Internal Medicine I.
Prof. Masi completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine with honors at the University of Pisa. He then moved to the United Kingdom, where he earned a PhD in Cardiovascular Sciences at University College London. He subsequently received a Career Development Fellowship from the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) at the same institution, as well as a Clinical Lectureship in Geriatrics and Internal Medicine at King’s College London.
Currently, Prof. Masi coordinates a laboratory dedicated to the characterization of macrovascular damage in patients with cardiometabolic and liver diseases at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, University of Pisa. He supervises two PhD students, two laboratory technicians, one postdoctoral fellow, and four residents in Internal Medicine. He has served as a clinical tutor in the “MBBS Cardiometabolic Patient Pathway” module at University College London’s medical degree program, and he currently teaches Internal Medicine in two degree courses at the University of Pisa. He is also a member of the board of two PhD programs (in Hypertension and Vascular Biology at the University of Padua, and in Translational Medicine at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa) and teaches in the PhD course “Clinical Trials in Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy” at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.
At the University of Pisa, Prof. Masi is a member of the governing board of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, where he also serve as delegate for internationalization. He previously served as Vice-Director of the Postgraduate School in Internal Medicine. He is also Vice-Chair of the Area 06 Scientific Committee and one of three members of the evaluation panel for medical projects within the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
Prof. Masi’s research explores the impact of traditional and emerging risk factors—including common chronic inflammatory conditions—on cardiovascular risk in both primary and secondary prevention. His work focuses particularly on the mechanisms underlying the transition from hypertension- and diabetes-mediated cardiac damage to heart failure. His translational research spans from basic science to advanced non-invasive ultrasound imaging techniques, used to characterize early cardiovascular damage and its determinants. Furthermore, he leverages large epidemiological databases, including genetic data, to define causal relationships between circulating biomarkers and cardiovascular outcomes, employing artificial intelligence approaches.
He has published more than 170 scientific papers in leading international cardiovascular journals, including The Lancet, Circulation, European Heart Journal, The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, Circulation Research, Journal of the American College of Cardiology – Cardiovascular Imaging, and European Journal of Heart Failure. He has contributed to consensus documents and practical guidelines for both the Italian Society of Hypertension and the European Society of Hypertension.
Prof. Masi serves as a reviewer for several high-impact journals, is Associate Editor of the European Heart Journal, and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Medicine. He has been involved in organizing national congresses for the Italian Society of Hypertension and the Italian Society of Internal Medicine, and currently serves as President of the Tuscany-Umbria Section of the Italian Society of Internal Medicine. He is also Vice-Chair
