Sauro Filippeschi

Profilo

Ruolo: Professore Ordinario

Struttura: Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Energia, dei Sistemi, del Territorio e delle Costruzioni

Settore scientifico-disciplinare: Fisica Tecnica Industriale IIND-07/A

Sauro Filippeschi is a Full Professor of Applied Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer at the University of Pisa. His academic career spans over two decades, during which he has contributed extensively to research, teaching, and international collaboration in the field of thermal sciences.
He holds a Ph.D. in Energetics and a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pisa. His research focuses on advanced heat transfer technologies, including pulsating and oscillating heat pipes, thermosyphons, thermal energy storage in metal foams with phase change materials, and shape memory alloy actuators. These studies have significant applications in aerospace, energy systems, and space environments.
Since joining the University of Pisa, he has progressed from Research Engineer to Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and currently Full Professor. He has also served as a Visiting Professor at Trinity College Dublin, strengthening international academic ties. His leadership roles include Vice-President of the Master’s Program in Energetics Engineering and the Interdepartmental School of Engineering.
Professor Filippeschi has coordinated and participated in numerous research projects funded by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and national programs such as PNRR. His work often involves experimental campaigns in microgravity, including parabolic flight experiments, and the development of innovative thermal management systems for space applications. He is an active member of ESA science teams and international committees, contributing to the definition of experimental requirements for advanced thermal systems. His expertise has been recognized through invitations to keynote lectures and participation in collaborative projects worldwide.
He teaches courses on thermodynamics, heat transfer, multiphase systems, and thermal management for aerospace systems. Over the years, he has supervised more than fifty master’s theses and several doctoral dissertations. He also serves as an external examiner for Ph.D. programs in leading universities across Europe and North America.
Professor Filippeschi has authored over 150 peer-reviewed papers and presented at more than 110 international conferences. His research has advanced the understanding of heat transfer phenomena in complex systems, earning him recognition within the scientific community. (https://arpi.unipi.it/cris/rp/rp14962)
