Prof. Sandro PACI earned his M.Sc. degree in "Nuclear Engineering" from the University of Pisa in 1982, followed by a Ph.D. in "Safety of Nuclear Plants" from the same institution in 1987. Since 1996, he has served as an "Assistant Professor" (Ricercatore) in "Nuclear Power Plants" at the Engineering School of the University of Pisa. He progressed to become an "Associate Professor" (Professore Associato) in 2004 and attained the rank of "Full Professor" of Nuclear Plants (Professore ordinario del SSD ING-IND/19 Impianti Nucleari) in 2019, all within the same university.
With nearly four decades of experience, Prof. PACI specializes in developing and applying numerical models and codes, particularly in the realm of containment thermal-hydraulics and aerosol transport during severe accidents in various generations of LWRs. Currently, his research focuses on safety analysis of nuclear plants, specifically thermal-hydraulics and the transport and release of fission products/dust during severe accidents, encompassing both in-vessel and ex-vessel scenarios, including the quantification of the related uncertainties. His work extends to innovative LWRs and future fusion plants like ITER or DEMO.
Prof. PACI has been actively involved in numerous research endeavors, including membership in the Scientific Committee of the JRC STORM Project and various committees related to EU projects such as PHEBUS FP. He has also contributed to several EURATOM projects (THENPHEBISP, SARNET2, MUSA, SEAKNOT), assuming responsibility for Pisa University, and has participated in national and international research groups on nuclear plant safety.
Additionally, Prof. PACI has played significant roles in academic administration, serving as a member of the Scientific Committee of the University of Pisa on Industrial and Information Engineering (from 2004 to 2008), President of the Teaching Board for Nuclear Engineering programs (from November 2009 to October 2013), and Pro-rector for university buildings and properties (from November 2010 to October 2016). He also served as one of the four elected members of the Board of Administrators of Pisa University from November 2018 to October 2024.
In September 2023, Prof. PACI was appointed as a nominated member of the National Commission for the Forecasting and Prevention of Major Hazards, focusing on the nuclear and radiological risk sector.
