Salvatore Vitale completed his MA in Classical Literature and PhD in Archaeology at the University of Pisa. After his PhD, Vitale held post-doctoral research fellowships at the Universities of Calabria and Cincinnati, as well as a fellowship (Borsa di Perfezionamento) at the Italian Archaeological School at Athens.

Vitale’s main research focus lies in the Final Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Early Iron Age of the Aegean. He is particularly interested in ceramics and chronology; landscape, built environment, and spatial analysis; processes of cultural interaction and identity formation; funerary practices; and archeological theory.

Since 2009, Vitale has been the director of the “Serraglio, Eleona, and Langada Archaeological Project” (SELAP), a research endeavor under the scientific aegis of the Italian Archaeological School at Athens (co-directed with Calla McNamee since 2016). Since 2018, together with McNamee, Vitale has also been a co-director and a field director for the team of external archaeologists that collaborate in the “Еπιϕανειακή Έρευνα στο νησί της Κω - Kos Archaeological Survey Project” (KASP), a project of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Dodecanese, directed by Maria Michailidou in collaboration with Toula Marketou.

SELAP’s and KASP’s teams under Vitale’s responsibilities respectively included more than 60 members from more than 10 countries and circa 25 universities/research institutions for SELAP and more than 40 members from 8 countries and 15 universities/research institutions for KASP.

Since 2006 and 2015, Vitale has also been a senior staff member in the Mitrou Archaeological Project (MAP) in Phthiotida and the Palace of Nestor Excavations (PONEX) at Pylos. Co-directed by Aleydis Van de Moortel and †Eleni Zahou (2004-2021) and by Van de Moortel and Euthymia Karantzali (2021-present), MAP isa synergasia between the University of Tennessee and the Ephorate of Phthiotida and Evrytania, under the auspices of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA). Within MAP, Vitale is the principal investigator for the study of Late Helladic IIA to Late Helladic IIIB ceramics. Co-directed by Sharon Stocker and Jack Davis (2015-present), PONEX is a project of the University of Cincinnati under the auspices of ASCSA. Within PONEX, Vitale directs the research team conducting the study of Bronze Age ceramics.

Vitale has published a monograph on Minoanizing pottery from Kos, as well as numerous influential articles on widely circulated international journals and series, such as Hesperia, Quaternary International, the Annuario della Scuola Archeologica di Atene, Studi minecei ed egeo-anatolici, Studi classici ed orientali, AEGAEUM, and Mykenische Studien.

Moreover, due to research commitments, from May 15th up until July 24th, 2026 (inclusive), office hours will only be held remotely (on the dedicated channel of the class on Teams). Appointments must be scheduled in advance via e-mail. Exact office hours will be every Friday, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
