The main topics of interest are: Climate change, Geoarchaeology, Coastal and Fluvial Geomorphology.
In the field of geoarchaeology the studies are based on a strongly integrated multidisciplinary approach, which includes remote-sensing analysis validated by geomorphological and geophysical investigations, historical cartography, topographic data, stratigraphic and tephrostratigraphic data.
In the field of coastal and fluvial geomorphology, studies have been addressed to palaeogeography and to the current evolution of different coastal and alluvial plains in the Mediterranean Basin (Arno, Magra, Cheyan) and in the Patagonian Coastal Plain (Argentina).
All these activities (on geoarchaeology, fluvial and coastal geomorphology) are designed to enhance palaeoenvironmental reconstructions of man-environment interaction. Particular emphasis was placed on the natural and anthropogenic climate changes with their societal effects in the Holocene (with particular regard to the 4.2 ka BP Event and to the Roman period).
In recent years, I have investigated the changes in the rainfall and temperature regimes by using long time series. The aim of these studies is to improve knowledge on the synoptic assets and to understand how these can influence the climatology of the Mediterranean in relation to current global warming. In this context, focusing attention on the alluvial and coastal plain management, using artificial intelligence techniques, I collaborated on the development on flood early-warning systems and water resource protection systems.
