RESEARCH INTERESTS: Developmental neurobiology using Danio rerio (zebrafish) as model systems: generation and functional studies of animal models for translational research in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders. Using the most recent biothecnologies such as CRISPR/Cas9, CRISPR/Cas13 and Base editors we are generating new in vivo models for Pitt-Hopkins syndrome, a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder with the support of Fondazione Telethon and Associazione Italiana Sindrome di Pitt-Hopkins. In parallel we are studying the developmental function of other genes, PTBP1, NKT and ZNF865, found mutated in human orphan genetic disorders. The ambition of our lab is to contribute to developmental biology unveiling new molecular mechanisms involved in brain development and to use our expertise in neurodevelopment to propose new possible therapeutic strategies aimed to ameliorate patients life.
