Director of the Developmental Psychiatry Clinical Unit at the Department of the Developmental Neuroscience of the Scientific Institute IRCCS Stella Maris
His main clinical/research interests regard: autism (see after); adolescent eating disorder (mainly hyperactivity and empathy deficit in restricting anorexia nervosa, and its treatment); Psychopathological antecedents in early onset schizophrenia; efficacy of an original model of brief parent-child psychotherapy for emotional disorders.
He has conducted several studies on autism: particularly on early identification and screening, diagnosis and treatment; neuroimaging; neurophysiologic correlates of face processing; biological markers; psychopharmacology. Main topics of more recent research are: 1) The coupling of clinical research science and bioengineering to study the neural foundations and cognitive processes underlying the development of autism and the social mind; 2) The application of new equipments such as the eye-tracking systems, diffusion tensor imaging, wearable biomedical devices and socially-responsive humanoid robots to study the nature of typical and atypical developmental processes of social cognition, behavior and sensory-motor system in autism; 3) To provide precise measurement of brain structures and connectivity as well as psycho-physiological and behavioural responses to study the neural correlates of social interaction; 4) To define new scenarios in research methodology and experimental designs and foster challenging technological frameworks for understanding and unraveling autism and the social mind.
Scientific production consists on several publications on national and international Journals.
