His research activity has been conducted in the fields of Automatic Control, Railway Engineering, Physiological Cybernetics, and Applied Mathematical Modeling. His early research focused on motion control, robust model identification, and parameter estimation techniques for dynamical systems, leading to extensive collaborations with the railway industry. He made significant contributions to the analysis and monitoring of pantograph-catenary systems for high-speed railways, receiving awards from the Italian Institution of Railway Engineers (CIFI) and twice from the Railway Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London. He also developed an arc detection sensor adopted by the Japanese Shinkansen high-speed railway system.

Since 2004, his research interests have progressively shifted toward Physiological Cybernetics, applying methods from Automatic Control to the study of biological and physiological systems. In this area, he has developed mathematical models to support clinical diagnosis and the design of optimal therapeutic protocols. Significant achievements include studies on obesity and bariatric surgery that led to the design and construction of a metabolic chamber currently operating at Pisa University Hospital, a unique facility for the quantitative assessment of human energy metabolism. He also transferred signal-processing techniques originally developed for railway applications to the study of sleep-related brain oscillations using EEG signals. In parallel, he developed mathematical models describing HIV infection dynamics and optimizing therapeutic strategies, contributing to a quantitative understanding of disease progression and treatment response. More recently, his research has addressed vaccination strategies, pandemic preparedness, and other public health challenges through the application of systems theory, predictive control, and mathematical modeling.
He is the author or co-author of more than 180 scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
