MAIN RESEARCH AREAS
Research activity of Prof. Paola Nieri has been always performed within the pharmacological area, with studies aimed at identifying new molecules and new drug targets or at giving insights on drug mechanisms of action.
Among drug targets, a particular attention has been paid to the study of membrane receptors belonging to the seven transmembrane domain G-coupled receptor superfamily, such as adrenergic, purinergic and cannabinoid ones. On this regard, her laboratory experience has been devoted to many aspects of receptor pharmacology looking often at molecular biology and genetic features as well. Moreover, great experience has been obtained in her career on preclinical pharmacodynamic assays, on in vitro and in vivo models. She has been devoted also to biotechnological strategies, approaching very advanced techniques for biodrug discovery, such as Phage-Display technique, nano-delivered oligonucleotide therapy and microRNA-based biomarker detection in blood. Moreover, she is also actively working in the marine pharmacology field, searching new active compounds from arine organisms having founded and held the role of director of the Marine Pharmacology Interdepartmental Center (MARinePHARMA) at the University of Pisa.
