Enrico Mugnaioli dedicated his PhD to the study of serpentine minerals by electron microscopy and crystallography, under the tutorage of Professor Marcello Mellini.
From 2007, he worked in the group of Ute Kolb at the Johannes Gutenberg-University of Mainz, where he collaborated with several public and private research institutions increasing his expertise in transmission electron microscopy and diffraction. He contributed to the development of Automated Diffraction Tomography (ADT), the first system for three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) data collection and analysis. He also applied 3D ED for determining the structure of several nanocrystalline phases, among which minerals, extraterrestrial materials, experimental geology products, nanoparticles, porous materials, inorganic and organic functional materials, pharmaceuticals and macromolecules.
From 2014 he was Principal Investigator of the Italina national project FIR2013 Exploring the Nanoworld, where he coordinated two research units located at the University of Siena and at the University of Pisa, respectively.
He was employed as Junior Researcher (tipo A) at the Department of Department of Physic, Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Siena, where he was responsible for the course of Crystallography.
In 2015 he was, together with Professor Franco Talarico, one of the founding partners of PetroLogic Sinergy®, a spin-off company of the University of Siena.
In 2016 he started collaborating with with the Center for Nanotechnology Innovation (CNI@NEST – Pisa) of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), together with Professor Mauro Gemmi.
From 2017 he was full-time Collaborator of IIT, first at the CNI@NEST, and later at the Center for Materials Interfaces (CMI@SSSA – Pontedera). Here he focused his research activity on the development of electron diffraction methods for the analysis of beam sensitive materials and nanoparticles. He was also involved in the industrial collaboration with the Belgian company NanoMEGAS®.
From 2022 he is Associate Professor of Mineralogy at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Pisa.
