Mario Innocenti

Mario Innocenti was born in Florence, Italy in 1951. He received the "Laurea" Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Pisa in 1977, and the Ph.D. degree from the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Purdue University, Indiana, in 1982.
From 1978 to 1982 he was a Research and Teaching Assistant in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Purdue University. From 1982 until 1992 he was on the Faculty of Auburn University, Alabama, Department of Aerospace Engineering, as an Assistant Professor and later tenured Associate Professor. He spent 3 years as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Pisa on leave from Auburn University. He has also been associated with the Mechanical, Aerospace, and Manufacturing Engineering Department, at Syracuse University, New York. From 1993 to 1999 he was Associate Professor of Automatic Control in the Department of Electrical Systems and Automation, University of Pisa. He has been Full Professor since January 1st, 2000, where he is currently a member of the Department of Information Engineering.
In the Academic Year 2008-2009 he has been a Senior Research Fellow of the American National Academy of Sciences performing research for the US Air Force Research Laboratory, Munitions Directorate, Eglin AFB, Florida and a visiting professor at the University of Florida REEF. He was a summer faculty in the US Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory (WPAFB, Ohio, Summer 1984), and the Guidance and Navigation Laboratory (Eglin AFB, Summer 1992).
Prof. Innocenti has been an invited lecturer and visiting professor in several international institutions such as: NASA Dryden Research Center (1985, 1994), NASA/JPL (1986), NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (1983, 1989), US Army Research Triangle Park (1985), Penn State University (1982, 1990), University of California, Davis (1982), North Carolina State University (1984), University of Missouri Rolla (1990), University of Colorado (2001, 2004), Stanford University (1985, 1990), West Virginia University (1994, 1998), University of Central Florida (2014), Turkish Air Force Academy (2004), Bogazici University (Istanbul Turkey, 2002), Middle Eastern Technical University (Ankara Turkey, 2000, 2006), Aalborg University (2006), ESA/ESTEC (1986, 2015).
Prof. Innocenti is currently active in, or has been part of the following professional organizations: AIAA, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (Associate Fellow, 1979-present); IEEE, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (Member, 1994-present); IARP, International Advanced Robotics Program (Member, 1986-present); SAE, Society of Automotive Engineers (Member, Guidance and Control TC, 2002-present); International Advisory Board, AIAA Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics (Member, 1985-2000); AIAA Guidance, Navigation, and Control Technical Committee (Member, 1982-2002); AGARD - NATO Flight Vehicle Integration Panel; (Italian Member, 1985-1998); RTA – NATO Systems and Integration Panel (Italian Member 1995-2000); IFAC technical Committee on Aerospace.
In the Academic Year 2018-2019 he has been a visiting professor in the Aerospace Engineering Department of Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, USA.
Prof. Innocenti main research activities are in the areas of control theory, guidance and navigation of aerospace systems, human-machine interface, control management of unmanned systems, drones, and mobile robots, and dynamics and control of rendezvous operations in space. He is author and/or coauthor of more than 230 international publications.
Prof. Innocenti was Vice Chairman of the Department of Electrical Systems and Automation in the period 1998-2002, promoter and first president of the Master's Degree in Automation Engineering in the period 2000-2008, and coordinator of the PhD program in automation, robotics and bioengineering in the period 2000-2008.
