Scientific activity
Lucia Guidi over 25 years of research on the effect of biotic and/or abiotic stresses on photosynthetic process, with particular reference to air pollution, water stress, mineral deficiency/toxicity, salinity, UV radiation. Dr. Guidi has specialized in particular on the use of ecophysiological methods, such as the study of chlorophyll a fluorescence. Over the years, as part of the theme for the study of the photosynthetic process, Dr. Guidi has extended the research to the effects of various biotic and abiotic stresses such as fungal pathogens of crops (Fusarium, Verticillium) and abiotic factors. Among the latter of particular importance were the studies on the effects of heavy metals, such as cadmium, on photosynthetic process and antioxidant systems (enzymatic and non) involved in the response of plants. The study of photosynthesis in plants subjected to stress is thus also directed towards the evaluation of the activities of key enzymes involved in the Calvin cycle Benson, as well as depth study of the processes associated with the absorption and utilization of light energy by of the pigments. In recent years, Prof. Guidi has further expanded the use of the methodology of chlorophyll fluorescence in acquiring mastery in the use of more sophisticated instruments, such as the fluorimeter for the analysis of the image of the fluorescence. Over the years, Prof. Guidi has turned its attention to the study of food quality; this interest began with literature searches that resulted in seminars and culminated with the study of process of enzymatic browning in fruit and vegetable fresh cut products. In this context, Prof. Guidi has undertaken research on the specific activity of enzymes involved in the metabolism of phenylpropanoids in plants subjected to stress. The studies of food is then aimed towards the influence of pre- and post-harvest factors on organoleptic, nutritional and nutraceutical quality of fruits and vegetables.
Prof. Guidi has several collaborations with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment of University of Pisa and and with researchers from other national and international research facilities
Prof. Guidi was involved in many National Project, as research and Scientific Responsible and she is responsible for scientific agreements and contracts with private companies. She is referee for many International Journals. Its scientific activity is documented by more than 200 papers (H-index 47; source Scopus 1995-2024).
