He graduated in Pharmacy from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Pisa and subsequently obtained a postgraduate specialization from the School of Specialization in Science and Technology of Medicinal Plants at the same University.
From 01/Jan/1991 to 30/Nov/2000 he served as Technical Collaborator (VII q.f.) at the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry and Biopharmacy (formerly Dept. of Bioorganic Chemistry) of the University of Pisa; he was appointed Confirmed Researcher from 01/Dec/2000 to 28/Dec/2014; from 29/Dec/2014 to 01/Nov/2023 he served as Associate Professor.
Currently, since 02/11/2023 he is in service at the Department of Pharmacy with the title of Full Professor.
Teaching and Supervision
His teaching experience includes several courses, such as Plant Biology, Pharmaceutical Botany, Identification of Medicinal Plant Constituents, Phytochemistry, etc.
He acts as a supervisor of compilation and experimental degree theses for the Degree Courses in Pharmacy, Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies and Herbal Sciences. He also serves as tutor and supervisor of PhD students.
Scientific Activity
He has authored more than 550 scientific articles on phytochemistry and the chemistry of natural organic compounds, published in leading national and international journals. He has also presented numerous scientific contributions at national and international conferences.

He has participated in several research projects funded by the Italina Ministry of University and Research, both as a research unit member and as Principal Investigator of a Research Unit.

Research interests
His mainresearch interests include the extraction, isolation, and structural elucidation of secondary metabolites of plant origin; the biological evaluation of natural compounds for their potential activity against human and animal diseases; the chemistry of essential oils; and the study of volatile organic compounds spontaneously emitted by plants and plant organs.
