EDUCATION, EXPERIENCES ABROAD AND POSITIONS:
1989-1992: Visiting fellow at the Department of Immunology, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.
1992-1997: PhD student in Immunology at the Microbiology and Tumorbiology Center, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. 1997: PhD degree awarded in Immunology at the Microbiology and Tumorbiology Center of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.
1998: Recognition of the Degree in Medicine and Surgery (MD) in Italy at the University of Pisa with 110/110 cum laude.
2003: Specialized in Microbiology and Virology at the University of Pisa with 110/110 cum laude.
2002 to 2022: Assistant Professor in the field MED/07 (Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology) and Associate Professor from 2023 to date at the Department of Translational Research and New Technologies in Medicine and Surgery, University.
INSTITUTIONAL ACTIVITIES (last 5 years):
2017-2022: elected member of the Council of the Medical School of the University of Pisa.
2017-2022: member of the Steering Committee of the Department of Translational Research and new Technologies in Medicine and Surgery of the University of Pisa.
2016-2023: elected member of the Council of the Clinical Department of Laboratory Medicine of Pisa University Hospital.
TEACHING ACTIVITY:
Since 2002 he has been teaching in numerous Bachelor Degree and and Master Degree Courses at the Medical School and Pharmacy Departments of University of Pisa; in the National PhD Course Space Science and Technology, and in the Specialization Schools in Microbiology and Virology, Dermatology and Pediatrics.
EDITORIAL ACTIVITY:
Since 2020 Associate Editor of Frontiers in Microbiology and in the Editorial board of Microorganisms
He has reviewed funding proposals for the FIRB, PRIN, and for the evaluating ANVUR VQR products, Italy; Wellcome Trust and Arthritis and Research Campaign projects, UK.
HOSPITAL ACTIVITY:
Since 2002 he carries out clinical microbiology activities at the Microbiologysection of the Pisa University Hospital (AOUP). From 2013 he has been responsable for the outpatient activity of Microbiology Unit providing clinical sampling and medical advice for mycological and bacteriological infections and for the laboratory diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections.
RESEARCH ACTIVITY:
Prof. Esin’s research interests focus on the following research topics:
i) Diagnostic, pathogenetic and immunological aspects of infections related to the development of biofilms; ii) Natural molecules and pro-postbiotics with antimicrobial and/or immunomodulating activity as a new class of anti-infective drugs; iii) Interaction between infectious agents and the natural and specific immune system of the host; iv) Rapid prediction and diagnosis of sepsis v) Sexually transmitted infections.

2021: Antibacterial/Antibiofilm potential of the wound-irrigation solution Granudacyn funded by: MÖLNLYCKE HEALTH CARE AB, Gothenburg, Sweden;
2021-2022: Probiotics: an emerging strategy to fight bacterial pulmonary infections in CF Foundation of Cystic Fibrosis Research, Grant number FFC#13/2021.
