Teacher of several courses of Mechanics and the course of Design of Bearings and Lubrication Systems at the University of Pisa.
Chairman of the PhD Course in Mechanical Engineering of the University of Pisa (2003-2007) and Vice-President of the Master Course in Mechanical Engineering of the University of Pisa in 2007.

Research activities principally on tribological aspects as elastohydrodynamic, hydrodynamic and aerostatic lubrication, friction and wear problems, also under mixed and boundary lubrication conditions. Both basic studies and applications, particularly experimental investigations on gears, cams, plain and tilting pad journal bearings. Also involved in studies on hydrostatic lubrication, micro- and nano-tribology, biotribology, magnetic levitation.

Responsible of the research unit of Pisa for some projects of national interest (PRIN) since 2007. Principal Investigator of the PRIN 2022 project “Energy SAving tilting pad journal BEArings for high speed turbomachinery (ESABEA)”.
Research projects financed by the Industry, especially related to friction and wear problems on gears and bearings.
Responsible of the Rotordynamics and Bearings Laboratory of the Research Centre for Mechanics of Turbomachinery and of the Tribology Laboratory of the University of Pisa.

Often involved as Member of Scientific and Organizing Committees of International Conferences, as the 2nd World Tribology Congress (WTC II, Vienna, September 2001), several AIMETA International Tribology Conferences (AITC) and European Conferences on Tribology (ECOTRIB). Particularly, Co-Chairman of the 4th AIMETA International Tribology Conference (Rome, 2004), Chairman of the second ECOTRIB (Pisa, 2009), Chairman of the Program Committee of the 5th World Tribology Congress (WTC V, Torino, September 2013), and Honorary Chair of ITS-IFToMM 2024.

Member of AIT (Italian Association of Tribology), AIMETA (Italian Association of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics), ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), EUROMECH (European Mechanics Society), SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), IFToMM (International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science).
Member of the Board of AIT since 2006 (Secretary from 2006 to 2008 and President from 2009 to 2014).
Italian ITC (International Tribology Council) Vice-President from 2006 to 2020.
Vice-President of the Tribology Technical Committee (CITRIB) of the Italian Association of Metallurgy (AIM), 2001-2005.
Member (Chair since 2020) of the IFToMM Technical Committee for Tribology, of the IFToMM Technical Committee for Rotordynamics and of the Cross Disciplinary Group 1: Securing our Future Environment – Air, Water, Energy. Also Co-Chair of the IFToMM Constitution Committee.

Referee and member of the editorial boards for several international journals.
Co-editor of some special issues of journals and books of Conference Proceedings.
