Research Activity Summary
1983-1985 WA25 experiment at CERN SPS :
Data analysis for the study of nucleon structure functions from neutrino and antineutrino scattering in deuterium. Leading role in the determination of the neutral currents chiral coupling constants.
1984-1988 PS180 experiment at CERN (Search for oscillations at PS) :
Participation to all the phases of the experiment and particularly to the design and set up of the solid state detectors for the determination of the characteristics of the neutrino beam. Development of all the relevant Montecarlo simulation programs and leader of the final analysis of the experiment.
1987-2000 MACRO experiment at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso - Italy :
Proponent of the experiment. Participation to the design and operation of the liquid scintillator system. Responsible for the design and construction of the DAQ system for the detection of neutrinos from stellar gravitational collapses. PI of the Pisa group from 1992 to 1997.
1994-2001 CHOOZ experiment at Chooz Nuclear Power Plant France (Search for neutrino oscillations) :
Proponent of the experiment. Responsibility in the test and set-up of the photomultipliers of the experiment. Responsible of the DAQ system of the experiment. Design and responsibility of a neural network trigger for the efficient selection of neutrino events. Leader of the final analysis of the experiment. Coordinator of the italian participation from 1998 until the end of the experiment.
1998-2003 MUG-TEST : INFN R&D activity
Spokesperson of an italian team for the study of crystal calorimeters (LYSO + NaI, CSI) with the best possible energy, timing and position resolutions in the detection of 50 MeV photons in view of a possible experiment at PSI to search for the mu->e gamma decay.
2003-present MEG experiment at PSI laboratory (search for the mu->e gamma decay):
Proponent and co-spokesperson of the experiment. Active participation in the design, construction, test and running of the innovative liquid xenon calorimeter (800 liter) including the development, together with the Hamamatsu company, of a new kind of UV sensitive photomultiplier able to work with high gain at the liquid xenon temperature at high light levels. Participation in the development new experimental methods for calibration of the liquid xenon calorimeter. Direct participation in the final analysis of the experiment.
