Project description

The PhD programme in Clinical Pathophysiology is designed to provide PhD candidates with the foundational knowledge required to pursue a career in biomedical research, training research professionals with technical expertise in the specific areas covered by the programme.

Over the course of three years, PhD students will develop the cultural and scientific competencies needed to operate at the highest level, both nationally and internationally. They will acquire the skills to independently design and carry out research projects, overcome the inherent challenges of the research process, and publish their findings in reputable scientific journals. In the academic context, the PhD is a prerequisite for access to research-focused positions, and the skills acquired are also highly transferable and applicable to both public and private institutions and national and international research consortia. Finally, there is strong demand for professionals with this profile in the pharmaceutical industry and the biomedical sector more broadly.

Course objectives

The PhD in Clinical Pathophysiology aims to train students in scientific research through the design, planning, implementation, analysis and writing of an independent research project, agreed upon with a supervisor from the academic board or other qualified experts.

Training includes laboratory and clinical activities, seminars, and formal classes delivered by the PhD lecturers or invited specialists. PhD students are also trained to conduct bibliographic research on topics related to their research area or broader scientific interests, and to present their findings through seminar presentations.

Special emphasis is placed on academic English, statistics and epidemiology, with formal courses provided in these areas. A solid understanding of these disciplines is considered essential for developing research protocols and interpreting results. These elements are fully integrated into the various curricula of the programme.
