Research residence permit

To collect and correctly fill in the application forms (mod 209 modulo 1 and modulo 2) for the issue of research residence permit, we highly suggest to contact assistance offices (Patronati), which provide free assistance by appointment. Alternatively, non-EU citizens can go to authorised Post Offices to collect the yellow envelope containing the application KIT and Form.

Proposed assistance offices (Patronati):

Documents for the residence permit application

  1. Passport
  2. Copy of the passport pages containing personal data and the page with the entry visa and the entry date stamp placed on your passport at the border upon entering Italy OR expiring residence permit, if you are already in Italy
  3. The application form (form 209 module 1 and module 2 found in the yellow kit) duly filled
  4. research nulla osta issued by the Prefettura
  5. Convenzione d’accoglienza – Hosting Agreement you signed with your Department Director
  6. 2025 Health insurance coverage paid by the hosting Department in Pisa or the italian health card (tessera sanitaria)
  7. research contract with our University (assegno/borsa di ricerca or else)
  8. the rental contract and its registration at the Tax Office (Agenzia delle Entrate)
  9. Italian mobile phone number (if you have one) where you can receive any messages from the Police regarding your residence permit application.

Please note: copies of the above documents and the hard copy of the application Form (mod 209 module 1 and module 2) must be included in the residence permit application at the Post Office.

Once the application has been completed and filled it must be sent by post through a Post Office which will issue two receipts:

The two receipts are very important because they prove that the residence permit application has been submitted correctly and ensure the legality of the stay in Italy.
