Research residence permit

To collect and correctly fill in the application forms (mod 209 modulo 1 and modulo 2) for the issue of research residence permit, we highly suggest to contact assistance offices (Patronati), which provide free assistance by appointment. Alternatively, non-EU citizens can go to authorised Post Offices to collect the yellow envelope containing the application KIT and Form.

Documents for the residence permit application

  1. Passport
  2. Copy of the passport pages containing personal data, the visa and the entry date stamp upon entering Italy OR expiring residence permit, if already in Italy
  3. The application form (form 209 module 1 and module 2 in the yellow kit) duly filled
  4. research nulla osta issued by the Prefettura
  5. the Convenzione d’accoglienza (Hosting Agreement) signed with your Department Director
  6. The private or public health insurance paid by the hosting Department or the italian healh card  (tessera sanitaria)
  7. research contract (assegno/borsa di ricerca or else)
  8. the rental contract and its registration at the Tax Office (Agenzia delle Entrate)
  9. Italian mobile phone number (if you have) where you can receive messages from the Police regarding your residence permit application.

Copies of the above documents and the hard copy of the application Form (mod 209 module 1 and module 2) must be included in the application at the Post Office. You will pay euro 30.00 for sending the application, and euro 70.46 for the issue of a residence permit up to a year OR euro 80.46 if you have a two years research contract and request a two years residence permit (please clarify the issue with the Patronato, before going to the post office).

Once the application has sent by post, the Post Office issue two receipts that ensure the legality of  your stay in Italy:

At the Police appointment, you must bring all above documents and 2 recent (passport size) photographs on a white backgroundThe Police will take the fingerprinting of each of your fingers and the palm of your hands.

Please note: the residence permit’s expiration date is based on the term indicated in the Host Agreement (Convenzione d’accoglienza). Therefore, if there is a significant discrepancy with the date of commencement of employment, the Prefecture must be informed upon your arrival in Italy and the Host Agreement must be amended if necessary.

After the fingerprints, if all documents are fine, the Police issues the residence permit in about 2 months.

Renewal of the residence permit

You can apply for the renewal of the research residence permit if your research Contract has been extended or you have a new research contract (borsa or assegno di ricerca).

In case of extension of the research contract, you must have:

  1. the extended Convenzione d’accoglienza, signed with your Department Head;
  2. the extended nulla osta issued by the Prefettura

In case of a new research contract, you must have:

  1. the new Convenzione d’accoglienza;
  2. the new nulla osta issued by the Prefettura

Once you have the above, you can contact again a Patronato and fill the renewal request enclosing also the below documents:

  1. Copy of the passport pages containing personal data
  2. copy of the expiring residence permit
  3. The application form (form 209 module 1 and module 2 found in the yellow kit) duly filled
  4. Health insurance coverage paid by the hosting Department in Pisa or the italian health card (tessera sanitaria)
  5. research contract with our University ( the new assegno/borsa di ricerca or the extension)
  6. the rental contract and its registration at the Tax Office (Agenzia delle Entrate)
  7. Italian mobile phone number

Copies of the above documents and the hard copy of the application Form (mod 209 module 1 and module 2) must be included in the residence permit application at the Post Office.

At the appointment with the Questura Officers, you will have to bring all documents above indicated and 2 recent (passport size) photographs on a white backgroundThe Police Officer will ask for your electronic signature on a special tablet and will take the fingerprinting of only your index fingers (both hands).

For a job-seeking (attesa occupazione/ricerca lavoro) residence permit, the researcher attaches documentation confirming the completion of the research activity carried out, issued by the hosting Department.
