I am a Full Professor of Veterinary Obstetrics, Gynecology, Andrology and Neonatology Clinics at the Department of Veterinary Sciences of the University of Pisa since February 2024.
I graduated in Veterinary Medicine in Pisa in 1993. Between 1994 and 1998, I obtained a Licentiate Degree and then a PhD from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden (advisors: C. Linde-Forsberg, M. Troedsson, and H. Rodriguez-Martinez, titles: "Studies on in vitro preservation" and "Studies on preservation, capacitation, and fertility of dog spermatozoa"). I then continued to do research at the University of Pisa, Italy, on equine semen preservation (1998-2001). Thereafter, between 2001 and 2015, I had a Researcher position a at the Department of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Pisa, while from 2016 to 2024, my role was Associate Professor.
My main teaching responsibilities are within the Veterinary Medicine Degree Program and the Animal Husbandry and Dog Training Degree Program at undegraduate level and within the two clinical specialization schools of our Department, one on companion animals and one on horses. I was Coordinator of the Veterinary Medicine Degree Program in Pisa between academic years 2022/23 and 2024/25. I have been responsible for the Project of Orientation and Tutoring (POT) 2023-2026 “Orientavet” for the Pisa office and contact person in the department of veterinary sciences for the Tutoring and Orientation Body since 2026.
Within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, I am the service manager for the Reproduction Unit and, within it, responsible of the Centre for equine semen production, equine embryo transfer and of the animal germplasm bank. I am a specialist graduated from the European College of Animal Reproduction in 2004 and I remained recertified throughout.
I am the author or co-author of over 200 articles and/or conference communications/abstracts. Of these, over 80 are in international peer-reviewed journals. My main research interests include semen evaluation and conservation, artificial insemination (dog, horse, donkey), embryo transfer (horse, donkey), estrous cycle management (dog, horse, donkey, reptiles), pregnancy and birth (dog, horse, donkey).
