Stefano Masi was born in Pisa, Italy, in 1979. He attended the State University of Pisa, where he graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 2004 and specialized in Internal Medicine in 2009. He completed a PhD at the Institute of Cardiovascular Science, University College London, UK in 2013 and was awarded the NIHR Career Development Fellowship from the local UCLH/BRC in 2014. In 2017 he was senior researcher at the University of Pisa and in January 2020 was appointed as Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the same University. Currently, he works at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine of the University of Pisa and is Honorary Associate Professor at the Institute of Cardiovascular Science, UCL (UK).
Prof. Masi is a Fellow of the European Society, permanent member of the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Atherosclerosis & Vascular Biology, of the European Council on Hypertension (European Society of Cardiology) and of the Italian Society of Arterial Hypertension. While working in Italy and UK, he was awarded several international (European Society of Hypertension) and national (Italian Society of Hypertension) grants and fellowships.
He is a member of the Editorial Boards of the European Heart Journal and Review Editor of the Frontiers in Physiology, and acts as peer-reviewer for several international journals and grant awarding bodies (British Heart Foundation).
He was chairman and delivered invited lectures at local, national and international congresses, including the annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology, European Society of Hypertension, Italian Society of Hypertension, Italian Society of Internal Medicine.
His main research area is the impact of inflammation, oxidative stress and cellular ageing pathways on the progression of cardiovascular damage, with emphasis on the mechanisms underpinning endothelial and microvascular dysfunction. He is also interested in the cardiovascular response to exercise and the mechanisms leading to the transition between hypertension and heart failure, with a specific emphasis in the phenotype of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.
Prof. Masi has participated in numerous clinical studies, and he has published 50 original papers, reviews and editorials in international scientific journals in the last 3 years (total H index: 17).
