The postgraduate degree course trains professionals in physical and forensic anthropology, equipping them with specific skills for the study of human skeletal remains — including biological profile reconstruction and personal identification — in archaeological and judicial contexts.

To achieve this objective, skeletal indicators are analysed to reconstruct health status, diet, type of physical and occupational activity, injuries, and cause of death.

The postgraduate degree course is delivered in a hybrid mode and includes the study of:

physical and forensic anthropology

human anatomy and osteology

paleopathology and the study of mummies

taphonomy

anthropology and funerary archaeology

judicial inspection techniques

The training programme includes a bioarchaeology and applied anthropology laboratory, where anthropological study methods are applied to buried and cremated remains to reconstruct biological profile, conditions of life and health status.

The course includes the participation in the archaeological excavation at Badia Pozzeveri (Altopascio, Lucca).
