The postgraduate degree course Nutrizione e dietetica in Nefrologia provides knowledge, insights and operational tools in the field of nutritional issues and dietary therapies related to nephrology.
The training programme explores the physiological foundations and general principles of proper nutrition, as well as the dietary strategies for the prevention of kidney diseases.
It deals with special diets for patients with chronic kidney disease, the specific nutritional principles for patients on haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, and the dietary guidelines for kidney transplant patients and for patients with kidney stones.
Furthermore, the postgraduate degree course offers knowledge and insights on oral hygiene, clinical organisation, paediatric nephrology, pregnancy, and physical activity in renal patients.
The postgraduate degree course is open to nephrologists, dietitians and nutritionists: this inclusive approach allows for broad discussion from different yet complementary perspectives and experiences, which forms the foundation for cultural growth in the field of renal nutrition, the main goal of the course.
Career opportunities
The postgraduate degree course offers the opportunity to work in the specialised field, in public and private healthcare facilities, as:
- nutritionists and dietitians with specific professional expertise in the field of nephrology, dialysis and transplantation. The postgraduate degree course provides knowledge that allows dietitians to interact with nephrologists with scientific awareness, for a better and more effective clinical impact on patients. It also provides the preparation and professional technique required for the training of the so-called renal dietitian, a position not yet codified in Italy but established and recognised internationally
- nephrologists with specific professional training in the dietetic-nutritional field. The postgraduate degree course enables the organisation of clinics dedicated to the nutritional management of patients with kidney disease at various stages, through collaboration with dietitians. This integrated approach fosters high-quality care programmes for kidney patients, aiming to obtain better treatment and quality of life for patients and reduce costs for the SSN.
