Apprenticeship

The advanced apprenticeship is an open-ended employment contract aimed at young people aged 18 to 29. In addition to paid work, it offers the opportunity to obtain a university degree or other higher education qualification, including a PhD.

Types of apprenticeship

Two types of apprenticeship can be activated in collaboration with the University of Pisa:

• Apprenticeship for obtaining a qualification (Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree – maximum duration: 2 years; Single-cycle Master’s Degree – maximum duration: 4 years; First- and Second-Level Postgraduate Degree – maximum duration: 2 years; PhD – maximum duration: 4 years)
• Apprenticeship for research activities, for those who already hold a Master’s Degree or higher qualification – maximum duration: 3 years.

• Apprendistato per il conseguimento di un titolo di studio (Laurea triennale o magistrale – durata massima 2 anni; Laurea magistrale a ciclo unico – durata massima 4 anni; Master di I e II livello – durata massima 2 anni; Dottorato di ricerca – durata massima 4 anni).
• Apprendistato per lo svolgimento di attività di ricerca, per coloro che hanno conseguito una laurea magistrale o titolo superiore – durata massima 3 anni.

Duration and Pay

Duration: The apprenticeship is an open-ended employment contract with a minimum duration of six months. The maximum duration depends on the type of apprenticeship.

Pay: For remuneration purposes, the company may classify the apprentice up to two levels lower than the position established by the relevant national collective labour agreement (CCNL).

Termination: At the end of the training period, both parties have the right to terminate the contract in accordance with the notice period established by Article 2118 of the Civil Code. If neither party expresses the intention to terminate, the employment relationship continues as a standard open-ended employment contract.

Certification of acquired skills

At the end of the apprenticeship, the University issues a certificate of the skills acquired, which may also be recorded in the employee’s electronic file (Fascicolo elettronico del lavoratore).

Parties involved

• University: facilitates cooperation between academic and business world, aligning its educational offer with labour market needs.
• Company: works with the University to design the apprentice’s training plan, based on the professional skills to be acquired.
• Apprentice: obtains a university degree or higher education qualification (degree, PhD, postgraduate degree) or carries out research while working and acquiring professional skills.

Required documents

• Agreement: signed by the University and the company, outlining their respective roles and responsibilities in the implementation of the apprenticeship.
• Employment contract: open-ended, written and signed by both the company and the apprentice.
• Individual training plan: jointly prepared by the University and the company. It defines key elements such as the apprentice’s contractual terms, training content, duration and yearly structure, and the criteria and methods for assessing learning outcomes. It is signed by the apprentice and both academic and company tutors.
• Apprentice’s individual dossier: includes general documents (agreement, employment contract, individual training plan, CV) and the interim and final evaluation reports.

Key Roles

• Company tutor: supports the apprentice during company activities, provides the necessary professional skills for the job, and integrates academic training with on-the-job learning.
• Academic tutor (selected from University teaching staff): oversees the educational and organisational aspects of the apprenticeship, monitors the apprentice’s training pathway, and participates in the initial, interim and final evaluations.

The signing of agreements and activation of individual training plans are managed by the Education and Student Services Division – Teacher Training, Internships and Apprenticeships Unit, Largo Pontecorvo 3, Building E, 56127 Pisa.
