Giacomo LORENZINI
Born in 1951, Professor Giacomo Lorenzini obtained his Laurea Degree (cum laude) in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Pisa in 1974. He began his academic career at the same University in 1981 as a Research Assistant in Plant Pathology and was a visiting scientist at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, in 1983. In 1987 he was appointed Associate Professor of Crop Protection, and from 2000 to 2022 he served as Full Professor of Plant Pathology at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment, University of Pisa.
Throughout his career, he held several major academic and institutional positions, including Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (2001–2003), Head of the Agro-environmental Research Centre of the University of Pisa (2005–2009), and Director of the “Leonardo” Institute for Research on Territory and Environment (2005–2006). He was an elected member of the Academic Senate of the University of Pisa for the 2016–2020 term. In 2018 he founded and became the first Director of CIRSEC, the Centre for Climate Change Impact of the University of Pisa, and in 2021 he promoted and directed the University Master Course on Sustainable Development and Climate Change.
Professor Lorenzini carried out continuous teaching activity for over forty years, delivering courses in Plant Pathology and related disciplines. For ten years he served as Dean of the Laurea Degree Programme in Management of Urban Vegetation and Landscape.
His research activity has primarily addressed crop protection, the impact of air pollution on plant life —particularly the molecular mechanisms underlying responses to ozone — and the biological monitoring of air quality. He is the inventor of a patented method for tropospheric ozone biomonitoring based on a miniaturized kit using tobacco germlings, which has been officially adopted by national environmental agencies in air quality monitoring programmes. He has served as National Delegate in several European working groups focused on the effects of air pollution on vegetation. His scientific achievements are widely recognized at the international level, with more than 4,100 citations and an h-index of 35 (Scopus, January 2026). He has acted as principal investigator in numerous research projects and has been the organizer of many scientific events, including major international conferences.
Professor Lorenzini is an Honorary Member of the Accademia dei Georgofili (Florence) and of the International Association for Biomonitoring of Environmental Pollution (IABEP). In 2015 he was awarded the Ordine del Cherubino by the University of Pisa. He retired in 2022 and, in 2025, was appointed Professor Emeritus by the Italian Minister of University and Research.
