Students enrolled at the University of Pisa may request a temporary interruption or a temporary suspension of their academic career.
Temporary interruption
You may request a temporary interruption of your studies for one academic year in the following cases:
- participation in voluntary civil service or voluntary military service (VFP1 – one-year fixed term)
- maternity, paternity or parental leave
- serious personal or family reasons that adversely affect your studies, possibly supported by specialist medical documentation
- enrolment in courses leading to qualifications or certificates for teacher training
- enrolment in and attendance of courses for non-commissioned officers of the Guardia di Finanza or Carabinieri, until completion of those courses
How to apply
To request a temporary interruption, send to the University of Pisa – Student Office, Largo Bruno Pontecorvo 3, Pisa, or to one of the local student offices:
- the completed request form (downloadable in .rtf or .pdf format)
- a EUR 16.00 revenue stamp
- supporting documentation (in the case of medical reasons, a specialist medical certificate is required)

Deadlines for submitting the request
The request must be submitted from 24 July 2025.
It is not possible to request interruption retroactively.
An interruption cannot be requested if exams have been taken or credits have been recognised during the academic year for which suspension is requested.
It is not possible to request temporary interruption for the same reason as in previous academic years, unless different circumstances apply.
Students enrolled simultaneously in two degree courses must request interruption for both courses, not just one.
What to do after the interruption period
After the interruption, students may renew enrolment and apply for a tuition fee reduction within 30 days from the end of the interruption period, without paying any late fee.
After this deadline, a late payment fee applies: EUR 50 for the first month of delay, EUR 100 for the second month, and EUR 150 after the second month.
Temporary suspension
If you have taken exams and/or obtained credit recognition during the academic year 2024/2025, you cannot request temporary interruption. However, you may apply for a temporary suspension of your academic career for 180 days. Only one suspension may be requested in the same academic year.
You may apply for suspension in the following cases:
- maternity, paternity or parental leave
- serious personal or family reasons that adversely affect your studies, possibly supported by specialist medical documentation
Suspension, approved by managerial order, entails:
- the inability to undertake any academic activity
- exemption from paying university fees falling due during the suspension period
The 180-day suspension does not stop the progression of your academic career, which continues to advance for the purpose of calculating the total number of academic years.
