The Master’s Degree Course in Economics trains professionals to analyse economic phenomena at various levels - corporate, sectorial, national and international. It has been developed by the Department of Economics and Management of the University of Pisa and the Laboratory of Economics and Management at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies. The course provides an environment conducive to strong interaction between students, and between students and faculty, fostering greater awareness and critical understanding of the economic dynamics under study. It provides a high level of proficiency in the methodologies and content of economic science and mathematical-statistical tools in order to understand, interpret, quantify, and intervene in the functioning of economic systems, both from a static and dynamic perspective.  Starting from the second year, the course offers three curricula:
  • General Economics
  • Official Statistics
  • Quantitative Finance
The curriculum of Official Statistics was recently recognised by the European Commission as a European Master in Official Statistics (EMOS).

For admission to the Master’s degree course in Economics, in-depth knowledge in the fields of economics and mathematical-statistical sciences and basic knowledge in a broader field of economics, business, law, history, social sciences, mathematics or physics is required; the student must demonstrate adequate preparation in the required subject areas. Due to the fact that the teaching courses are entirely held in English, a language proficiency not lower than level B2 in English is also required.

The curricular requirements for admission are defined in the academic regulations of the Master’s Degree Course, in terms of the number of credits obtained in specific scientific-disciplinary fields.

In particular, Master’s Degree students from Italian universities must have acquired in their previous academic career at least 81 credits in the following scientific-disciplinary fields:

- 18 credits in the field of SECS-P/01 (Political Economy);

- 9 credits in the field SECS-S/01 (Statistics);

- 9 credits in the field SECS-S/06 (Mathematical Methods of Economics and Actuarial and Financial Sciences);

- 45 credits in the following fields: SECS-P/01 (Political Economy); SECS-P/02 (Economic Policy); SECS-P/03 (Financial Science); SECS-P/04 (History of Economic Thought); SECS-P/05 (Econometrics); SECS-P/06 (Applied Economics); SECS-P/07 (Business Economics); SECS-P/08 (Economics and Business Management); SECS-P/11 (Economics of Financial Intermediaries); SECS-P/12 (Economic History); JUS/01 (Private Law); JUS/09 (Public Law); SPS/04 (Political Science); M-STO/04 (Contemporary History); MAT/03 (Geometry); MAT/05 (Mathematical Analysis); MAT/06 (Probability and Mathematical Statistics); MAT/09 (Operations Research); FIS/01 (Experimental Physics); FIS/02 (Theoretical Physics, Mathematical Models and Methods).

The Academic Regulations of the degree course also define the methods to evaluate the adequacy of students’ personal preparation.

For admission to the Master’s Degree Course in Economics, in-depth knowledge in the fields of economics and mathematical-statistical sciences is required as well as basic knowledge in the broader fields of business, law, history, social sciences or mathematics. Since the courses will be taught entirely in English, a knowledge of English of at least level B2 will also be required.

The verification of the students’ curricular requirements and personal preparation will be carried out by a special selection Panel, composed of 6 members appointed by the Department of Economics and Management of the University of Pisa and the Institute of Economics of the Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento Sant’Anna.

In particular, Master’s Degree students from Italian universities must have acquired in their previous academic career at least 81 credits in the following scientific-disciplinary fields:

- 18 credits in the field of SECS-P/01 (Political Economy);

- 9 credits in the field SECS-S/01 (Statistics);

- 9 credits in the field SECS-S/06 (Mathematical Methods of Economics and Actuarial and Financial Sciences);

- 45 credits in the following fields: SECS-P/01 (Political Economy); SECS-P/02 (Economic Policy); SECS-P/03 (Financial Science); SECS-P/04 (History of Economic Thought); SECS-P/05 (Econometrics); SECS-P/06 (Applied Economics); SECS-P/07 (Business Economics); SECS-P/08 (Economics and Business Management); SECS-P/11 (Economics of Financial Intermediaries); SECS-P/12 (Economic History); JUS/01 (Private Law); JUS/09 (Public Law); SPS/04 (Political Science); M-STO/04 (Contemporary History); MAT/03 (Geometry); MAT/05 (Mathematical Analysis); MAT/06 (Probability and Mathematical Statistics); MAT/09 (Operations Research); FIS/01 (Experimental Physics); FIS/02 (Theoretical Physics, Mathematical Models and Methods).

For students from non-Italian universities, the fulfilment of the above curricular requirements will be assessed with reference to the educational content of the courses and examinations taken.

Assessment of meeting curricular requirements and an initial evaluation of personal preparation will be acquired through analysis of the curriculum studiorum, where necessary supplemented by assessment of results achieved in previous academic career, which will be evaluated in relation to the distribution of academic outcomes from educational institutions and/or countries of origin.

For the assessment of personal preparation, the Panel, on the basis of the elements at its disposal, and of the criteria predefined by the Degree Course Board, may supplement the analysis of qualifications and of the CV with additional forms of assessment. In particular, it may proceed:

- on the basis of an interview focusing on the disciplines mentioned in the curricular requirements, also to be conducted by telephone conference and including, where possible, an expense allowance for the candidate;

- on the basis of the results of directly administered tests;

- on the basis of the results of the GRE test.

English language proficiency of at least level B2 or equivalent is verified on the basis of the results of internationally recognised tests or level assessments issued by UNIPI or SSSUP. The test result must normally be available by the application deadline. The Panel may verify the language skills of students without the above-mentioned certifications by means of an interview.
