The Master’s Degree Course in Biotechnologies and Applied Artificial Intelligence for Health provides skills for understanding complex biological phenomena and for using artificial intelligence and bioengineering systems in the field of health biotechnologies.  It allows the acquisition of interdisciplinary and integrated knowledge in various areas of learning, including:
  • Complex biological systems and methodologies for the design of biotechnological health strategies in compliance with bioethical and biosafety regulations
  • Development principles and applications of artificial intelligence in health biotechnology
  • Pathophysiology and sensory processes
  • Principles of organisation, access and management of biological big data
The training programme features a common interdisciplinary path, which is developed in the first and second year, and two curricula:
  • Biology - dedicated to bioengineering and computer science disciplines
  • Engineering - focusing on disciplines in the biological and biotechnological area.
This Master’s Degree grants eligibility to take the state examination for qualification as a Senior Biologist, enabling registration with the National Order of Biologists

For admission to the Master’s Degree Course in “Biotechnologies and Applied Artificial Intelligence for Health” students require a Bachelor’s Degree in the scientific disciplinary field Biological Sciences (L-13), Biotechnology (L-2), Engineering (L-8, L-9), Computer Science (L-31) or another qualification obtained abroad, recognised as suitable according to current regulations. For admission to the Master’s Degree Course, graduates from other degree classes must demonstrate possession of curricular requirements corresponding to an adequate number of CFUs in specific scientific-disciplinary fields that will be defined in the academic regulations.

In any case, students wishing to be admitted to the Master’s Degree Course in “Biotechnologies and Applied Artificial Intelligence for Health” must have an adequate background in fundamental disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science and biological disciplines relating to the functioning of cellular systems and organisms.

For admission to the Master’s Degree Course, proficient knowledge of English (level B2) is also required.

Verification of the possession of such knowledge and the adequacy of personal preparation is carried out according to the methods defined in the Academic Regulations of the degree course.

Students with the following prerequisites will be eligible for access to the Master’s Degree in ‘Biotechnologies and Applied Artificial Intelligence for Health’:

- Those who have earned a first level-degree in Biotechnology (L-2) or Biological Sciences (L-13), and have acquired, in their previous educational programmes, knowledge corresponding to at least 30 CFUs in biology disciplines (SSD from BIO/01 to BIO/19) and at least 18 CFUs in Biochemistry (BIO/10), Genetics (BIO/18) and Molecular Biology (BIO/11).

- Those who have earned a first-level degree in Engineering (L-8 or L-9) or Computer Science (L-31), and have acquired, in their previous educational programmes, knowledge corresponding to at least 30 CFUs in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics (SSD INF/01, INGINF/05, ING-INF/06, MAT/01-MAT/09, SECS-S/01) and at least 6 CFUs in Mathematics (MAT/01-MAT/09), and 12 ECTS in INF/01, ING-INF/05, INGINF/06, SECS-S/01.

- Those who have earned a first-level degree in other classes and have acquired, in their previous educational programmes, knowledge corresponding to at least 90 CFUs in SSDs indicated as ‘basic’ in the schemes of class L-2 - Biotechnology (from FIS/01 to FIS/08 - INF/01 - from MAT/01 to MAT/09 -

MED/01 - SECS-S/01, SECS-S/02 - CHIM/01, CHIM/02, CHIM/03, CHIM/06 - BIO/01, BIO/10, BIO/11, BIO/13, BIO/17, BIO/18, BIO/19) or L-13 Biological

Sciences (BIO/01, BIO/02, BIO/04, BIO/05, BIO/06, BIO/07, BIO/09, BIO/10, BIO/11, BIO/18, BIO/19 - from FIS/01 to FIS/08 - INF/01 - ING-INF/05 - from

MAT/ 01 to MAT/09 - CHIM/01, CHIM/02, CHIM/03, CHIM/06).

Eligible students must also demonstrate proficient knowledge of English at least at level B2.

The same criteria of eligibility as above will be applied to those students who earned their university degree in foreign countries.

The verification of the initial preparation consists of a possible written test and an oral test, carried out by a special commission, to verify the possession of adequate knowledge of the disciplines that refer to the scientific disciplinary fields indicated above.

The written test will be carried out at the discretion of the commission based on the number of applications for admission to the Master’s Degree programme.

The oral examination will assess the level of English language proficiency and will be conducted exclusively in English.

Only students who already possess the required degree for admission may participate in the test(s).

Only students who pass a written test and fulfil the curricular requirements are eligible to take the oral test.

Depending on the result of the oral test, the following situations may occur:

- unconditional admission to the Master’s Degree programme, or

- non-admission to the Master’s Degree programme, or

- admission subject to completion of specific educational activities (up to a maximum of 40 CFUs). In this case, the student will be enrolled in Single Transition Courses to achieve the required level of preparation.
