Leonardo Bertini received a Master's Degree in Nuclear Engineering at the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1980, cum laude. He has worked for about four years in the design offices of two mechanical companies: Nuovo Pignone (Florence) and CMF-Costruzioni Metalliche Finsider (Guasticce-Livorno), Italy. After the experience in industry, he returned to the University of Pisa where he obtained a PhD in Mechanics of Materials. Since 2000 he is Full Professor in "Machine Design" at the University of Pisa.
His research topicsinclude: Numerical Methods (Finite Elements, non-linear analyses), Automation of design procedures (CAE, Expert Systems), Fatigue and Creep, Fracture Mechanics, Residual Stresses, Composite Materials, Dynamics of Structures and Modal Analysis, Mechanical Behaviour of Oil-Drilling Drill String components.
His research activity is documented by about 130 publications. Many papers have been published on international journals.
Awards: Associazione Italiana per lAnalisi delle Sollecitazioni (AIAS) Best Paper in Conference Award 1992 and 2000, Journal of Strain Analysis for Engineering Design Best Paper Award 2010, SMAU Innovation Award 2016, CAE Conference Best Poster Award 2016, AIAS Simulation Award 2017.
Patents: Instrument for stress-strain curve measurement by instrumented indentation test, Helios for measurement of material hydrogen content.
Since 1993 to 2000, Professor Bertini was a member of AIAS Directive Board and since 2005 to 2007 was elected President od the same Association.
