Interessi di ricerca

Valerio Cutini’s research interests are targeted on the analysis of urban settlements, mainly focused on their development processes and the diachronic genesis of their morphology and functional organization.
The activity, carried out within LISTA (the Laboratorio di Ingegneria dei Sistemi Territoriali e  Ambientali of the University of Pisa), has focused, in particular, on the development and implementation of different approach to urban modelling, including traditional spatial interaction models as well as more recent methods of spatial analysis. The research activity, targeted in particular on the spatial analysis of urban systems, can be briefly referred to the following lines:
-       Development and improvement of analysis tools for territorial knowledge – Valerio Cutini is involved in an international network of researchers engaged in the development of the techniques of spatial analysis that – under the heading of Space Syntax -  focus on configurational analysis, aimed at identifying, based on the structure and organization of the urban space, the effects induced on a wide set of phenomena (activities location, distribution of movement flows, distribution of property values, etc.). Valerio Cutini’s personal contribution in this framework was in the implementation of the existing configurational techniques and the introduction and development of new techniques, such as that called mark point parameter analysis – Ma.P.P.A.. Among the provided innovations it is worth mentioning the possibility to automate the construction of the spatial system interrelating the techniques of configurational analysis with the territorial databases, georeferenced in GIS environment.
-       Implementation and validation of the analysis tools for urban planning – The researches were aimed at assessing and verifying over a wide and various set of case studies the reliability of the techniques of spatial analysis, either for the comprehension of the inner geography of urban settlements and as a concrete support tool for their planning.
-       Use of the configurational methods and techniques for urban resilience – This line of research was targeted on resilience, and in particular on its network-oriented notion, in order to explore and identify the intrinsic spatial features, if any, that can assure an urban settlement the capability of sustaining disruptions and local alterations of the spatial grid with limited changes on its behaviour.
-       Study of the dynamics of self-organization – The researches were focused on the use of the spatial analysis techniques for the comprehension of the spontaneous mechanisms of morphogenesis of settlements and their inner geography, with particular attention to the issue of informal settlements.
Valerio Cutini has given lectures in several universities in Italy and abroad (including Georgia Institute of Technology, Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, Université de Côte d’Azur, Biskra University), served as chairman or speaker on dozens of international conferences and workshop program committees (including several Space Syntax symposia, ICCSA conferences, ERSA conferences, ECTQG colloquia, INPUT conferences), as well as member of the editorial board of scientific journals.
He has published 68 articles on peer-reviewed scientific journals, 7 scientific books, 85 chapters in scientific books or proceedings of international conferences.
