Interessi di ricerca

S.A. Cancemi is a nuclear engineer and researcher at the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering of the University of Pisa, where he teaches "Nuclear Materials" for the Master's Degree in Nuclear Engineering. His research focuses primarily on innovative topics that combine advanced artificial intelligence techniques with the safety and management of nuclear facilities.
Main Research Interests:

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence: Development and application of advanced algorithms for predictive monitoring, anomaly detection, and operational management of nuclear facilities, including neural network models for anomaly identification and residual life prediction of components.

Thermo-Mechanical Analysis and Modeling: Use of high-performance numerical methods (HPC) for the structural and thermal simulation and analysis of nuclear components, with particular focus on storage and transport containers for radioactive materials in accordance with IAEA regulations.

Radioactive Waste Management and Characterization: Experimental and numerical studies on cementitious and geopolymer materials used in the disposal and sustainable management of radioactive waste, with a focus on long-term safety assessment and structural stability.

Advanced Nuclear Safety Technologies: Application of inverse techniques for heat transfer problems and digital twin systems for real-time monitoring of nuclear components.

European Projects:

Eurad 2: Task leader for activities related to digital twins for radioactive waste management and partner in other work packages.

Opera HPC: Key contributions to the development of advanced thermo-mechanical tools for the analysis of advanced nuclear fuels.

Predis: In-depth studies on the thermo-mechanical behavior of geopolymer matrices used in radioactive waste management.

NARSIS: Advanced analysis of cumulative effects and aging on critical components of nuclear facilities.

Awards and Recognitions:

Winner of the SNETP Innovation Award (2024).

Winner of the Italian PhD Nuclear Talent Award (2024).

ASME Awards for best presentations and scientific papers (ICONE 2021, 2022, 2023).

International recognition as Young Author at the NENE 2021 conference.

Teaching Activities:

Lecturer of the "Nuclear Materials" course.

Teaching support for courses in Decommissioning, Structural Mechanics, and Mechanical Principles for Nuclear Engineering.

Industrial Collaborations and Technical Consulting:

Scientific and technical consultancy for companies such as Sogin Spa, Comecer Spa, and Nucleco, with a focus on containers for the transport and storage of radioactive materials.

Institutional Role:

Representative of DICI researchers in the Academic Senate of the University of Pisa.
