His main research activities are in physiology of fruit trees and orchard management. In particular, he has been working on the physiological response to salinity and drought of olive, and the ecophysiology of this crop for orchard design and productivity (pruning systems for reduced labour input, irrigation management, carbon assimilation and partitioning, stress physiology). He is a member of the American Society for Horticultural Science since 1987, of the Italian Horticultural Society (SOI) since 1996, of the Accademia dei Georgofili in Florence since 1996. He is President of the National Academy of the Olive and Oil (Spoleto, Italy) since 2014. He is author of more than 220 scientific and technical publications.
