Paolo Nepa (1999 Member, IEEE; 2020, Senior Member, IEEE) received the Laurea Degree in electronics engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1990. Since 1990, he has been with the Department of Information Engineering, University of Pisa, where he is currently a Full Professor. In 1998, he was at the Electro Science Laboratory (ESL), The Ohio State University (OSU), Columbus, OH, as a Visiting Scholar supported by a grant of the Italian National Research Council. At the ESL, he was involved in research on efficient hybrid techniques for the analysis of large antenna arrays. His research interests include the extension of high-frequency techniques to electromagnetic scattering from material structures and its application to the development of radio propagation models for indoor and outdoor scenarios of wireless communication systems. He is also involved in the design of wideband and multiband antennas for mobile communication systems, as well as in the design of antennas optimized for near-field coupling and focusing. He was working on channel characterization, wearable antenna design and diversity scheme implementation, for body-centric communication systems. In the context of UHF-RFID systems, he is working on efficient techniques for radiolocalization of either tagged objects or mobile readers in the context of IoT and Smart Industry scenarios. He has co-authored more than 300 international journal articles and conference contributions. Many of above journal papers have been co-authored with researchers from foreign research centers (ElectroScience Laboratory, The Ohio State University, Ohio, USA; National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan; Polytechnic School of Engineering, University of Oviedo, Gijon, Asturias, Spain).
Since April 2002, Paolo Nepa has been teaching several courses at the School of Engineering of the University of Pisa: Antenna Engineering, Technologies and devices for wireless systems, Microwave and mm-waves devices, Foundations of electromagnetics. Since 2001/02 he has served as advisor of more than one hundred final thesis of BS and MS students, of the Electronics Engineering and Telecommunication Engineering degrees. Since the academic year 2016/17, he is a member of the lecturer board of the University of Pisa at the Italian Navy Accademy, in Leghorn, Italy. From 2004 until 2015, he served as the Faculty Board Member of the PhD program in “Applied electromagnetism in electrical and biomedical engineering, electronics, smart sensor, nano-technologies”, at the University of Pisa. Since 2014 he serves as the Faculty Board Member of the PhD program in “Information Engineering”, University of Pisa. He has been the supervisor of thirteen PhD students of the University of Pisa.
He is the coordinator of the first edition of the Summer School “Microwaves and mm-waves for the Design of Advanced Wireless Links: Communication, Sensing and Power Transfer”, University of Pisa, 8-13 July, 2024.
Since January 2023 he is serving as Editor-in-Chief of the journal IEEE Journal of Radio Frequency Identification, and since September 2021 he is serving as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. Since October 2016 till 2022 he seved as Associate Editor of IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, and he was a recipient of the Outstanding Associate Editors Awards for IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters in 2021.
He served as the General Chair of the X edition of the IEEE International Conference on RFID Technology and Applications (IEEE RFID-TA 2019), 25- 27 September, 2019, Pisa, Italy. He was a recipient of the Young Scientist Award, from URSI (International Union of Radio Science) Commission B – Fields and Waves”, at the 1998 URSI
