Matteo Zupancic is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor (RTT) in German Studies (Germ-01/B) at the Dipartimento di Filologia, Letteratura e Linguistica.

From 2023 to 2025, he held postdoctoral research positions at the Istituto Italiano di Studi Germanici (Rome) and the Stuttgart Research Centre for Text Studies, where he contributed to a digital edition of Goethe's Venetian Epigrams. He earned his PhD (Dr. phil.) from the Universities of Pisa and Tübingen in 2022, following his studies at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa (2013–2018). Matteo was also a Stipendiat at the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach (2019) and is set to be a Weimar Fellow at the Klassik Stiftung Weimar in 2025. His dissertation received the Colombaria Prize 2023 for the best PhD thesis in Historical and Philosophical Sciences.

He serves as editor of Odradek. Studies in Philosophy of Literature, Aesthetics and New Media Theories, and as corresponding editor for the Year’s Work in Modern Language Studies section on 18th-century German literature. Matteo is a senior project member of Goethes Venezianische Epigramme – Kritische digitale Edition (IISG, SRCTS, VeDPH, BemboLab, and Klassik Stiftung Weimar). He is also a project member of Il cinema tedesco occidentale in Italia (1949–1989): co-produzione, distribuzione e funzione (IISG) and a collaborator on DiScEPT: Digital Scholarly Editions Platform and aligned Translations (IISG).

He is a fellow of several scholarly associations, including the Modern Language Association, Associazione Italiana Germanistica, Goethe-Gesellschaft, English Goethe Society, Ernst und Friedrich Georg Jünger Gesellschaft, and the European Academy of Religion. Additionally, he is affiliated with the Venice Centre for Digital and Public Humanities (VeDPH).

Matteo’s research interests center on literary language reflection in the Moderne and the intersections of literature, philosophy, and theology. He also explores the epistemology of cultural studies, modern and digital philology, literature and film, and the relationship between literature and biology from the Goethezeit to the Weimar Republic.
