Prof. A. Pompella is author of over 160 papers, published in international peer-reviewed scientific Journals, 3 international patents and approx. 140 presentations at national and international congresses; in particular, to date his publications have received over 15000 citations (Scholar H index = 54). Has served as Reviewer for Journals as Biochemical Pharmacology, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, Free Radical Biology and Medicine, Pharmacology, Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Brain Research, FASEB Journal, as well as for the Wellcome Foundation. Is member of the Società Italiana di Patologia e Medicina Traslazionale, the Society for Free Radical Research (SFRR) and the Society for Histochemistry. During the period 1998-2000 has been elected in the European Committee of the SFRR. Since 2002 is Associate Editor of Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics. In Spring 2003 has served as Referee for the Greek State Council for Science and Technology (CRST). Since 2007 participates in research projects funded by ISTC (Moscow) and based at the University of Yerevan, Rep. of Armenia. Since 2020 is Co-editor-in-chief of Advances in Redox Research (Elsevier).

Research activity of Prof. Pompella has been dedicated to molecular mechanisms, histochemistry and pathophysiologic effects of oxidant stress and lipid peroxidation, with special reference to the roles of glutathione and glutathione-related enzymes. His studies were concerned with the identification in vivo of products of lipid peroxidation, the functions of gamma-glutamyltransferase enzyme activity in cell redox regulation, anticancer drug resistance and progression of atherosclerosis.
