Every year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation offers scholarships to international students and Italian students living abroad.
The Study in Italy scholarship:
- provides a monthly allowance of €1000, paid quarterly into the recipients’ Italian bank account. The first instalment of the scholarship can only be received after completing university enrolment and submitting all required documents. MAECI will start the allocation procedures at the end of each quarter. The final instalment of the grant will be paid only after satisfactory academic progress has been verified
- it is allocated for a study period of 9 months
- it provides an exemption from paying university fees, except for the regional tax of €140 and a tax stamp of €16.
Who can apply
Foreign students not resident in Italy and Italian nationals resident abroad (IRE) may apply.
Those who wish to apply must:
- come from one of the eligible foreign countries. The list is published at the bottom of the call for procedure
- have the required academic qualification for enrolment at an Italian University or Institute
- be under 28 years of age at the end of the application period
- provide an Italian language level certificate (the minimum level required is B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), in order to enrol in a degree course in Italian. The applicants who have registered for an Italian language course at the university can provide a language certification issued by a language lecturer from the university department
- provide a certificate demonstrating English language proficiency, with a minimum required level at B2 of the CEFR. Proof of knowledge of the Italian language is not required for courses held entirely in English. Self-certification may be valid for applicants from countries where English is an official language and who apply for courses taught entirely in English.
The deadline for the 2025–2026 academic year is set for May 16, 2025.
