E' Professore ordinario di Diritto commerciale nel Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Giurisprudenza presso il Dipartimento di Giurisprudenza dell'Università di Pisa. Svolge attività di insegnamento presso la Scuola Superiore di Specializzazione per le Professioni legali dell'Università di Pisa. Ha ricoperto incarichi d'insegnamento presso l'Università Cattolica di Milano, la Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento S. Anna di Pisa e l'Accademia Navale di Livorno. Ha condotto studi in tema di diritto delle società, diritto dell'impresa, diritto fallimentare e diritto del terzo settore, pubblicando opere monografiche e articoli scientifici sulle più prestigiose riviste specializzate. Dal 1997è iscritto all’Albo degli Avvocati del Foro di Pisa, si è specializzato nell’attività di consulenza e di assistenza legale in materia contrattuale, commerciale,societaria e fallimentare e nel diritto del terzo settore.

Ray Garcia (Chairman)
Ray Garcia is the managing director of Buoyant Capital, a global peer advisory think tank addressing the growth challenges of small to medium sized enterprises. The firm coordinates its team of experts to help its clients improve competitiveness through talent management, global market expansion partnership access, technology asset management, capital investment and restructuring. Buoyant Capital was founded in 2000 in New York City and has helped launch several start-up companies and works as an advisory to company founders, CEO's, and their investors. Ray has over 20 years of experience as a technology entrepreneur, as company CTO co-founder, for four venture-backed companies. Earlier in his career, he worked as an executive for major banks including, Citicorp, Republic National Bank (now HSBC), Bank of America, and as a technology consultant to several large US multi-national corporations. In 2008, he served as an executive in resident at MIT Media Lab. Since 2010 he serves on the advisory board of Baruch College Field Center for Entrepreneurship. From 2011 to 2014, he taught an accelerated course in entrepreneurship at the University of Pisa, Italy, School of Economics, to PhD candidates and International MBA executives with a focus on innovation, technology transfer and venture spin-offs. In 2015 he is serving as a business expert to EU Commission Horizon 2020 SME innovation instrument where he will evaluate commercialization grant proposals of technology ventures and coach company executives who have received grant funding. Ray published the books "StartUP SOAR Coaching" and "Launch a Global Business" which are based on his experiences starting and growing global businesses. Vincenzo Ferrari

Vincenzo Ferrari, after graduating in Computer Engineering with a thesis on the development of humanoid man-machine interfaces, started his first research work on similar issues at the National Research Council of Padua, where he also developed tools for the acquisition and analysis of biomechanical data related to phonation in pathological subjects or not. Then, he worked for a private company as a R&D coordinator of a small team to develop systems for data acquisition and quality control by artificial vision (in the pharmaceutical division) and voice interactive systems, animatronics and 3D avatars (in the Entertainment division). During this period he discovered how to work to translate research, in particular algorithms for machine vision and virtual reality, into products. He started his first experience with European research projects, working for that Company in a project concerning the development of an intelligent system for medical reporting. In 2006 he decided to start academic research in the biomedical field joining the EndoCAS Centre for Computer Assisted Surgery of the University of Pisa as a PhD Student. He defended his thesis in February 2009 regarding segmentation, registration and mixed reality and afterwards, he became the scientific coordinator of EndoCAS. During the Phd studies and the previous experiences, he matured competences and interests for his research activities: development of innovative algorithms and devices for Image Guided Surgery and Surgical Simulation. He is now working very close to the clinical needs and some of his inventions are patented. The SpinOff Company he founded, is based on one of his patents.

Riccardo Apreda
Riccardo Apreda, PhD, is co-founder and R&D director at Erre Quadro, a University of Pisa spin-off specialized in tools and methodologies for Intellectual Property analysis and valorization. With a background in Theoretical Physics, his present research interests are in the field of Engineering Design, with particular attention to formal models to represent technologies and to algorithms for the automated analysis of technical texts.
Domenico Golzio
Domenico Golzio, holds a degree in Physics. After working as electronic engineer in telecom, car and aerospace industries he moved to European Patent Office becoming patent examiner in the field of Basic Electronic Circuitry, Telecom and Digital Computers. He has been the Director of a Search and Examination Unit in the area of Electricity Technology. Currently he leads the Directorate responsible for the development of Tools for Patent Prior Art Search and Patent Information. He researched on various IPR areas like relationship between patent and innovation, patent information, international patent portfolios, comparison between different patent systems. He has lectured on IPRs in various Universities across Europe.
Abstract
Usually start-up companies (and often well-established ones, too) perceive patents only as a defensive tool, and therefore take into account just the legal and administrative aspects. Actually, patents are far more than that. Rather than just a deterrent, they constitute a sophisticated business tool in themselves. First of all, Intellectual Property Rights alone or in combination help the return of investment. Patents are specific rights to protect ideas of technical nature. An introduction to the patent procedure is presented together with the strategies to maximize the return of investment. The case of Computer Implemented Invention is analysed with some typical examples. Second, the worldwide Intellectual Property corpus is a goldmine of information. Some strategies to harness that goldmine are discussed, in order to guide and strengthen design and R&D activities, to gain competitive insight and foresight, to widen market and business horizons, and to use the IP portfolio as an economic and financial lever.

L’Ing. Corrado Borsano è membro dell’Ordine dei Consulenti in Proprietà Industriale, mandatario europeo brevetti presso l’EPO (Ufficio Europeo dei Brevetti), mandatario comunitario marchi e design presso l’UAMI (Ufficio per l’Armonizzazione del Mercato Interno – Marchi, Design e Modelli). Ha svolto attività nel settore della Proprietà Industriale presso importanti società di telecomunicazioni come Responsabile della sezione brevetti italiana di Siemens e in seguito Alcatel. E’ attualmente responsabile dell’ufficio di Milano di Metroconsult, società specializzata in servizi di consulenza in materia di Proprietà Intellettuale. L’Ing. Borsano opera inoltre come Consulente Tecnico di parte e come Consulente Tecnico d'Ufficio presso il Tribunale di Milano.
Oltre ad essere iscritto a numerose altre associazioni quali AIPPI (Associazione internazionale per la protezione della Proprietà intellettuale) ed EPI (European Patent Institute), l’Ing. Borsano ricopre la carica di Segretario della LES (Licensing Executives Society) Italia.
Abstract
In many cases a start-up business is based on exploiting an invention. The value of an invention, when writing a patent application, is generally unknown. It can be very low or very high. The claims of a patent define the protection like a fence defines the property on a land. When the value of the invention is high, if such "fences" are weak or are not positioned properly, the inventor risks to lose everything. Moreover, good claims on good inventions can attract investors, which can increase the value of the business. The object of the talk is to briefly explain what should be done to have the maximum patent protection, since the beginning of the activities of patent application drafting and then of prosecuting it in the examination procedures, in order to attract interest on a patent.

Attualmente è Professore in mobilità all’Università di Brescia dove è delegato al piano strategico e all’innovazione e trasferimento tecnologico.
Abstract
The intellectual property rights are a set of tools able to give “protection” for innovation. The patent is the most common and its use, from the evaluation of the invention to the explotation on the market, requires the definition of both strategy and goals. This is particularly crucial within public research organizations where the inventions generate from research activities. The seminar will present the basics of intellectual properties and the main criteria to use it to generate impact from research.

Alessandro Piol is a Partner and founder of AlphaPrime Ventures, early stage investor in the next generation of enterprise and business solutions. He is also a co-founder of Vedanta Capital and was a General Partner of Invesco Private Capital. He spent 10 years with AT&T where he co-founded AT&T Ventures. He is President of the NY chapter of TiE, vice-Chairman of the Board of Visitors of Columbia’s Engineering school and member of its Entrepreneurial Advisory Board. He co-authored Tech and the City: The Making of New York’s Startup Community. He is also involved in philanthropic activities around health and education. He has a BS and MS in Computer Science from Columbia and an MBA from Harvard.
Abstract
What does it take to raise money for a new business? What do investors look for? Where are the best places to start a business and increase your likelihood of success? Raising money is an art more than a science. Communicating the essence of your business in a concise and engaging manner is key in convincing investors to back your business. What data is necessary and how it needs to be organized will be a key part of this presentation. We will also explore what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur and what makes the difference between a successful business and one that does not work out. We will use the New York ecosystem as an example of a successful new entrepreneurial region: how it developed, why many companies move there and how lessons learned in New York are applicable to Italy. What are the limitations of Italy and should you try to develop a business in Italy or abroad?

È docente di comunicazione politico allo IED di Roma. Collabora con le testate locali del Gruppo Espresso, La Repubblica - Bari e Valigia Blu. Fa parte dello staff del Festival Internazionale del Giornalismo di Perugia.
Abstract
Il principale impatto dell’avvento su larga scala della connettività da dispositivi mobili e la diffusione dei social media hanno modificato radicalmente le strategie efficaci di comunicazione di individui e organizzazioni. La reputazione digitale è negoziata quotidianamente da milioni di utenti, clienti, consumatori, elettori, cittadini che, senza chiedere il permesso a nessuno commentano, valutano, giudicano persone e organizzazioni con cui hanno a che fare nella loro vita quotidiana. Oggi, dunque, la comunicazione efficace non consiste più nella capacità di trovare slogan a effetto o nella forza muscolare di chi può comprare spazi pubblicitari, ma nella capacità di gestire rapporti continui, trasparenti, uno-a-uno con la propria comunità di riferimento. Internet e i social media in particolare rendono inoltre opportuno un presidio costante, quotidiano dei propri presidi istituzionali: un silenzio online fa molto più rumore di un silenzio offline. Le buone e le cattive pratiche di comunicazione sui social media, la gestione della reputazione digitale e l’utilizzo di tecniche efficaci di storytelling saranno l’oggetto di un riflessione su come vincere una sfida impegnativa ma allo stesso tempo affascinante: come essere rilevanti in un mondo in cui tutti comunicano, come essere presenti quando essere presenti vuol dire comunicare in tempo reale.
