Ethics in research

The University of Pisa makes the following resources related to ethics in research available to its teaching staff:

  • Our University Code of Ethicsis a binding document applying to the entire academic community. It contains important university-wide regulations covering issues such as non-discrimination, the prohibition of plagiarism, the recognition of the social relevance of research and the freedom of access to scientific literature.
  • The Bioethical Committee is the independent body that advises on all research involving experimentation on healthy human volunteers, the study of biomaterials, or experimentation with other non-animal living beings (such as plants or ecosystems) outside of a clinical setting.
  • The Animal Welfare Body(OPBA), a collegial body established by law and present at the University, performs the functions required by both national legislation and by University regulations on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. The Research and Technology Transfer Services Department provides support to research groups that carry out research activities necessitating the use of animals. The University also has an animal housing service, located in the Departments where the animals and related research laboratories are housed. For questions relating to ethics and animal protection in research, the relevant section of the website also indicates rules and procedures established by national and community legislation to ensure the welfare of animals used in experimental procedures and oriented towards the replacement and reduction of in vivo methodologies.
  • Non-profit clinical trials are subject to a complex national and regional regulatory framework: the procedure to be followed is available at this link (in Italian).
