Student exchange programme

The Student exchange programme is dedicated to EU and non-EU international students that, based on an inter-university or inter-departmental non Erasmus agreement, decide to spend a semester or entire academic year at the University of Pisa.

Students who are instead looking to participate in the Erasmus+/Erasmus programme can find information in the Portal and on the dedicated webpages.

Who can take part

In order to take part in this programme, you must be a student enrolled at a foreign university that has a bilateral agreement with the University of Pisa.

Students who take part in the Exchange programme are able to attend courses offered by the University of Pisa for the duration established in the agreement.

It is always possible to apply, but in order to follow the courses please note that the academic calendar is divided into two semesters: the first, from September to February, and the second, from February to July.

Therefore, to allow the Department sufficient time to process the acceptance letter to the programme, we advise you to send your application before the 31st of May (for attending the 1st semester or the entire academic year) and before the 31st of October (for attending the 2nd semester).

Rights, duties and services

Exchange students are entitled to take exams and acquire credits without paying the university fees. At the end of the study period, they will receive a statement of the work carried out.

Exchange students will have to arrange by themselves their stay in Pisa (food, accommodation, health care, etc.).

Exchange students can benefit from the same services as students enrolled at the University of Pisa (access to university libraries, to IT services and to the university canteens).

In addition, the Welcome Office will be ready to provide assistance for exchange students upon their arrival in Pisa.

Procedure for application to the programme

Before leaving: candidates must refer to the International Office of their home university to check that they have an agreement with the University of Pisa or with the department involved. If mobility can be activated, candidates interested in following the courses offered at the University of Pisa must choose from those available in the UNIPI academic offer.

To apply, you must send to this address: Questo indirizzo email è protetto dagli spambots. È necessario abilitare JavaScript per vederlo. the following documents:

  1. The application with the Learning Agreement included properly signed

Candidates selected will receive an acceptance letter from the academic staff.

In the case of non-EU citizens residing abroad, the said letter must also be presented to the Italian Diplomatic Representative of the candidate's country (or that of their country of residence) to request a study visa. For further information on visits to Italy:

If your application is not accepted, you will receive an email.

Arrival in Italy: non-EU citizens that are going to carry out a mobility period of more than 90 days must request a residence permit within 8 working days of their arrival in Italy. All the relevant information (including health insurance and the tax code) is available on the web pages dedicated to welcoming international students.
