From 6 to 11 July, the University of Pisa hosted the 2026 Summer School in Ecological Economics, focused on the theme “Leveraging Ecological Economics to Advance the Sustainability Transition“. Directed by Professor Tommaso Luzzati, the Summer School was organised by the University’s Department of Economics and Management in collaboration with Leonardo-IRTA and the European Society for Ecological Economics.
Designed primarily for PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and early-career scholars, the programme combined lectures, workshops, discussion sessions and interdisciplinary exchanges focusing on ecological economics and the transition towards sustainability. The week opened with participant registration and a keynote lecture by Giulia Romano (University of Pisa), entitled “Stuck at the Bottom? Enabling Factors and Bottlenecks in Climbing the Waste Hierarchy“.
The Summer School brought together Italian and international academics and researchers to explore topics including the foundations of ecological economics, complex systems, degrowth, integrated assessment, water and sustainability, carbon pricing, and community building.
