From 27 July to 14 August 2026, Aarhus University hosted the Circle U. Summer School “Guardians of Democracy: Comparative Constitutional Law in an Age of Democratic Backsliding”, organised by Professor Angioletta Sperti (University of Pisa) and Professor Lars Johannsen (Aarhus University).
The Summer School focused on the challenges facing contemporary constitutional systems in an age of democratic backsliding and rule of law erosion, offering a comparative perspective on the role of courts, institutions and constitutional mechanisms in safeguarding democracy.
The course brought together students from several European universities within the Circle U. Alliance, including the University of Pisa, Aarhus University, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and UCLouvain, providing a valuable opportunity for academic exchange and discussion in an international setting.
